About us

The Building first became a Meadery in the Easter of 1970. For a while before its evolution, it was a café and Bar.

Originally the building was clay sheds, and in excess of 100 years old. Four re-enforced walls, that allowed the arriving boats to unload their china clay into the top of the building.

In 1970, the Leiworthy family made the building into what you see today, after the success of the first Meadery at Newlyn, and very little has changed. The Meadery was originally only half the size it currently is and the menu consisted of Chicken in the Rough, Scampi and Fish Fries, with chips. Not even any desserts were offered.

As time and popularity went on, the menu grew to offer desserts, salads and eventually what you see today. The Cornish Mead remained the same!

The Meadery still remains in the same family, although it’s the 2nd generation leading it now.

We have 3 floors here at The Waterside Meadery. The main restaurant and Kitchen on the ground floor, the function room/restaurant and bar on the second, and on the third is our best kept secret, added 25 years ago, The Roof Terrace, that has indoor and outdoor seating that looks over the working harbour.

Although the restaurant has seen many developments and weathered some ferocious storms, there is little that has altered from the original idea. A medieval style of dining by candlelight, served by waitresses and eating with your fingers, whilst enjoying the locally brewed Cornish Mead.

Always a great atmosphere and friendly service here! Portion sizes are massive, brilliant value for money and the mead choices are amazing! Always something new to try each time you visit

We went as a family group for my Birthday in August.. the staff were amazing as ever, so friendly & helpful, we arrived dripping wet from the rain & they offered to dry our coats while we enjoyed a delicious meal together. The photo is of Kath 'big nana' who has just 'rung the bell' after major op & many visits to Treliske.. We have visited many times & feel so sad that it could all end soon!! 😪

Wasn't a terrible Meadory, however the seats we were given were in my opinion not fit for purpose. 2 people go to a meal and have to sit side by side next to the kitchen door !!! The food is what I would expect from a Meadory. The service was adequate at best because of our seating I would say that they was very little atmosphere at all no privacy and I had to turn the chair sideways on to the table to see my guest. Pleasant staff had the seating been better this review would have been.

Went here tonight. Fantastic, generous portion sizes, good drinks and fantastic service. Not only was the waitress great to talk to and attentive to our every single little need, but she was also highly knowledgeable and taught us a about mead and Cornwall throughout the night. Ripper meal, will be back if I ever visit Penzance again.

First things portion sizes... the portion are massive...and it is not a case of quantity over quality. The food is good, specially the fish dishes. My partner got the fish fries which was extremely fresh. Also the prawn starters amazing. Last thing massive thanks to the staff! Super friendly and did not forget about us in the corner. Constantly checking up on us to see if we needed anything. Amazing customer service.
