Lovely relaxed pub with friendly staff. Will return in winter as I would imagine it's very cosy. Food good but expensive We really enjoyed our visit.

I spent two cozy, very comfortable nights in one of the Red Lion’s shepherd’s huts and would highly recommend the experience. It was as well appointed as any hotel room, with nice touches like an Alexa speaker and complimentary gummy sweets. The heating worked perfectly (it was freezing outside) and the bed gave me an excellent weekend of sleep. The bathroom is fully functional, despite being in a detached building. The continental breakfast was fantastic and delivered precisely at the pre-arranged time. The pub itself has excellent food and two cozy fireplaces. Perfect for a quiet weekend of country walks. (My only suggestion would be slightly bigger bath towels.)

This resturant has amazing potential to become great. The welcome was fantastic, and the hosts behind the bar and serving were attentive and kind. The choice of beverages is good. The meal, however, was disappointing considering the price paid. I am happy to pay a high price for great quality food, but this certainly was not great food. Starters consisted of a parsnip soup that tasted sweet and glupy thickness of saliva and no flavour. Steak and chips. Surely it would be hard to get that wrong? Well, it was a bit of a damp squib as the chips were 3 x or 4 x fried and tasted old as though it had been cooked very early in the day or the day before. The salad was nice but straight put on a packet with sainsburys parmesan shavings on top. The steak was cooked well but had no real taste or seasonings, and at such a high price, avoided using ketchup as the use of such condiments can make dog food taste good. We also had a vegetarian meal that could have been great, but vegetarians need protein, too. Vegetarians don't just eat vegetables. We asked for an additional item to be incorporated in the vegetarian option, but instead, we were given an accompanying side dish of grilled halloumi with no seasoning sauce or anything. Could have made this myself at home. Celeriac in breadcrumbs were tasteless, absolutely no flavour. Desert was apple tatin, but the caramel was burnt, and we couldn't get the pastry off the plate. Even the spoon got stuck, and we left it to stand vertical. This is not a whinge or complaint, just a record of fact as we didn't want our money back it was just disappointing. The red lion gave us this meal and obviously believed the meal was fine. We were asked if everything was ok, and we said yes as it was a quiet pub, and we didn't want to make a complaint but would have liked to speak to the chef. It would be great if the Red Lion could look at the menu and also taste the food that is offered to customers as I'm sure the issues could be rectified very quickly. This pub is a long way from most houses so most people would need a good reason to travel to the pub by car. Good food would do it. Please try harder with your food and I'm sure you will be very successful

Walked here for lunch, from our caravan after reading the great reviews and we weren't disappointed. It was a lovely day so sat in the garden where two friendly chickens came along to greet us. We decided to try the Northmoor Red Ruby Devon Beef Burgers, I had the Skinny Fries and my husband had the Chunky chips and both were delicious! Desserts were the Strawberry & White chocolate cheesecake and Custard tart with Raspberry puree. They were to die for. The waitress was lovely and very attentive. We couldn't have asked for more and will definitely be back!

Hadn't been here for a couple of years so thought we'd visit again being as we were staying close by. Stopped in for a Sunday lunch, small family of 3 with a 5 year old. What I liked about this pub is there's no background music piped out which makes a nice change. The welcome is warm and friendly enough as you'd expect for a community pub that's been running for a good few years now. Being as it was Sunday, we all had a Sunday roast which was topside of beef (£16) and a child's roast pork (£7) all of which were throughly enjoyed. The roast beef was plentiful and tender with the roast spuds crispy on the outside. We ordered an extra side of veg but only due to personal preference for lots of veg! Desserts were also enjoyed and while an ordered coffee was forgotten about, it wouldn't stop us going back again, as we have done a few times over the years. A good country pub as it should be!
