Wonderful stay and dinners at McKays for 2 nights. The location is ideal, the room (superior) nicely appointed and very comfortable, the food very good and varied (I can be a bit fussy too), but it’s the staff that makes this hotel, bar and restaurant such a great place. They all get along so well and are the friendliest bunch. A pleasure to be around. Can’t wait to be back again in May!
We found ourselves in McKay's after a ditched attempt at a Cafe down the road which had run out of bread none the less we were greeted with open arms at McKay's, the service was great if not slightly rushed and uncoordinated (they tried to take my food away when I was not finished) we ordered 2 scampi and 2 appletise the scampi was the run of the mill frozen type as we're the chips, recommendation don't reheat frozen chips they turn into potato sponges, I found the salad the best part. For the food and drinks we were just shy of £50 massively overpriced for what it was the 10% service charge was also off-putting...... If your food is good people will tip if it's bad they won't.
We booked this hotel 14 months in advance (for 31/12/12023 and 1/1/2024) and were under the impression we had booked a hotel room. A month before we arrived we received a message saying to book a table as they would be busy. We called to be told there were no tables in the restaurant nor the bar as there was a private function and there would be no food nor would the bar be open - not even for residents. THIS IS NOT A HOTEL EXPERIENCE rather a very bad B&B. Its a longer story but beware ensure you are booked into the main hotel and not their second building. Its a very cold, single glazed with very little heat and no room service. Because we were not made aware of their private function we were moved out the hotel. I did try to bring this to their attention twice but they just were not interested in making anything good - BEWARE!!
A gem. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful, there was a real buzz in the evening with the live music, and the room was spacious and well above average. I'm not a regular reviewer, but I do like to give positive feedback to places that deserve it
Great location and nice bar. Negative points. Bedroom - nice enough but 5 coat hangers in a small wardrobe. Bathroom - large but no hooks or places to hang towels in use, or to hang clothes when having a shower. Wash basin partially blocked and filling with water which is slow to run away. Old debris rising from u bend. Bar - nice and welcoming but very pricey. Public toilet smells badly from early afternoon and smell travels into the bar every time the door opens. Check in very late at 4pm. A nice hotel but could make a number of improvements.
