I visited in August 2023. I really enjoyed the steak & ale pie! Such a good portion size. Let downs were the unavailability of several menu items, and the tables were really close together making it feel a little cramped. We had booked online with the code for a discount, however when we checked the receipt later in the evening we realised we had been charged full price.
A perfect place. The food was just amazing. Loads of well cooked meat. Veg was also well cooked. Service and atmosphere was spot on. Whenever we are in the area this will be the place to go. Thank you.
Called here on Friday after a shopping trip with my wife. Had been told it was a nice little place and I was really looking forward to a tasty meal. Upon arrival it all looked good, it was quite busy and had a nice buzz about the place. We sat down and ordered the drinks. The staff were pleasant and the drinks choice was OK, so it was all going well. Then we tried to order food, mine was straightforward enough as I'd already decided to go for the mixed grill (can't go far wrong with that, so I thought). My wife asked for the pie, sorry said the waiter, we are out of pie. OK said my wife, I'll try the bangers and mash, we don't have any mash, but you can have chips or boiled potatoes? Alarm bells ringing, my wife changed to the hunters chicken with chips and salad. Surely if you can offer potatoes you can make mash. Bizarre We waited what felt like an age for the food, again I gave them benefit of doubt due to it being busy. But when it arrived I was rather disappointed. They asked how do I want the steak cooked, I go for medium rare on this. It was more like we'll done, in fact everything was over cooked including the chips on both dishes. My wife said the chicken wasn't great, we worked our way through what we could as we were both really hungry by this point. I'm fuming with myself as really we should have sent it back. We basically eat most of the food, felt really bad about the food quality, paid without a tip and left. We have been on a really good run with restaurants and the quality of food we've had. But this brought us back to earth with a bump. Fair to say, we will not be returning to this place and would not recommend it to anyone. Very disappointed as its a lovely location and has a nice vibe. But the food was woeful. I think it was more shock that we didn't complain. This maybe would have made some difference, but then it's no excuse to serve sub standard food.
This place has potential.but is let down by substandard food and service. My starter was a prawn cocktail with watery tasteless prawns, some chopped celery and cucumber and a tiny drizzle of a seafood sauce that was woefully inadequate to save this starter from being flavourless just a poor effort. The main course went some way to redeeming the situation. Oven roast cod was served with a creamy leek sauce and mustard mash potato which generally worked well. What didn't help the overall experience was slow service despite not being busy including needing to ask for the bill twice etc which took an age to arrive for no apparent reason. I wanted to recommend a visit as the building has its charms and the place has potential but the overall quality just isn't there.
Visited the Holly bush for my 42nd birthday . Recently refurbished and it was so different to the last time i visited . Lovely thatched roof , low ceilings with beams warped windows . The food was very nice , my mix grill was larger than I'd normally have and it defeated me . Only criticism I had was that the menu could have been better and it was not very vegetarian friendly
