About us

It's a centuries old coaching inn set in an ancient Thomas Hardy village so pretty it takes your breath away.

Think of soft, rounded chalk hills, watercress farms, thatched cottages and a trout stream running through it. Add in crisp white sheets, fluffy towels, freewi-fi everywhere and officially the best pub food in Dorset (two Good Pub Guide Awards) and you get the perfect English pub with rooms.

And all in Dorset's loveliest village. This is 'real' England. Sydling St Nicholas is recorded in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book written in 1086. A collection of pastel painted houses built from flint and stone, it lies in a valley a mile off the main A37 Dorchester to Yeovil road and every route in to our village is chocolate box pretty.

There are no street lights so the night sky is carbon black, walk off dinner literally under moonlight or take the torch from your bedroom.

We own our pub so no-one tells us what beers to sell, and we have a regularly changing guest ale (unless the locals petition for it to stay longer!) We have two draught ciders on offer, alongside Heineken, Amstell and Estrella lagers.

And we just love wine. We have an extensive wine list which includes new and old world wines. If you ask for water we will supply you with a jug of tap water unless you specifically ask for a bottle.

Not far off & sighn posted from the A37 Stopped off & eaten here a couple of times now & loved everything we’ve had. Great atmosphere and set in a beautiful little village.

Excellent meal with great service. A slightly higher price than you may pay for food elsewhere but definitely worth every penny. Roast beef on Sunday is highly recommended and portions are very generous. Sensible prices for a decent glass of wine too.

We really enjoyed our meal at this lovely pub. Mid priced gastropub set in a pretty village. They had a singer/pianist who was good. Bit of a drive from our home but worth it. I liked the beer on tap. Wine priced relatively.

Really lovely country restaurant. Great staff and a wonderful, delicious meal. I was very pleased that we had stopped there. We would highly recommend and plan to go there again.

While I did enjoy my dinner with the Greyhound inn, I must admit I noticed that the manager of the building spent an inordinate amount of time berating and belittling his staff members in what I’m sure he believed was behind the scenes. In regards to the staff they were polite, kind and quick to help us with anything we needed. In a world that seems to not be able to hold on to favorable staff it boggles my mind that the owners would retain someone who would seem to drive away or at least make harder the jobs of the people below them. I’m glad that I was not the one who paid for my meal as I believe I would have left and found somewhere where I didn’t have to listen to a middle aged man having an ego trip at a bunch of twenty something’s.
