About us

The Fleece overlooks the expanse of Witney’s beautiful Church Green. Since we took it over twenty years ago it has twice been voted one of the top twenty pubs in the UK. Loyally supported by the people of Witney we are one of the few places in town where you can sit outside on sunny days, eating, drinking and watching the world go by. We also have a private dining room for meetings or parties and 10 comfortable, characterful en suite bedrooms.

The gastropub is open every day from 8am for breakfast, with lunch served from noon & hot food available all day. We take huge pride in serving the best ingredients we can find, from ethical producers, freshly prepared by our chefs. Whether you pop in for a pint, a business lunch or a special dinner, we promise you a friendly welcome. All day long.

I can't speak to the rooms here as I only came for lunch, but as a dining experience I can honestly say it was one of the worst meals I have ever had the misfortune of eating. Slow service, with a waitress that appeared to be hating the job and her life in general, and then we get to the food... ...which was terrible. I ordered a burger and asked for it to be cooked "medium" (the only options I was given were medium or well done) and it came out cooked so long that it had the consistency of old boot leather. The desert (which at least was edible) took 45 mins to arrive and no reason or apology was given. AVOID this restaurant at all costs.

Attended as part of a large party. Service was fantastic and prompt and waiting staff incredibly helpful. The front of house team cannot be faulted. However, the food was a bit of a disappointment. I understand as a large group there is a set menu to order from, there is only one non meat option on this menu which was incredibly spicy, almost too spicy to eat. Spice is a common dislike and having the only plant based dish be loaded with chillies seems a bit of an oversight. The cheese plate was better but still not the portion size you would expect for the price being paid. 3 thin triangles of cheese and 5 crackers for over £10. Lovely pub and staff fantastic but wouldn't get my recommendation for food.

We booked the private dining room at The Fleece for an 80th birthday celebration - Sunday lunch for 18 people. The service was great - Finn was our waiter for the day and was extremely efficient and friendly. The food was very good. The only (very slight) issue that took a star (would have been half a star if that was an option) is that the room was quite crowded with 18 of us, the lighting was a little gloomy and the rug/mat under the table seemed to be a bit of a trip hazard. But that was a very minimal gripe - all round we had a very pleasant afternoon and everyone left feeling full of good food and good cheers. Thank you to all the staff.

Upon arrival whilst I checked us in, my husband ordered drinks at the bar, Bacardi & Coke for me and an Ale for himself. It wasn't Bacardi, but Havana white rum. Returned that and mentioned it shouldn't be sold as Bacardi. The evening meal was lovely but was missing items off the menu unfortunately. The room itself was very nice and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was big and clean. BUT there was a loud humming noise which sounded like a boiler running all night. Neither of us could sleep. After a nice breakfast we left to come home both extremely tired. So if you do decide to stay, avoid Room 5. The staff are friendly as is the pub with good atmosphere. We would go again but request a different room 😊

The actual room was a lovely size and the bed really comfortable. The bathroom was big and clean. The staff were friendly. BUT all we could hear all night was a constant loud humming noise. Unsure what it was. We were next to the fire exit and I opened the door and it was even louder. We had hardly any sleep. Once we had an enjoyable breakfast we left to come home. So for us it wasn't worth the £168 for b&b. The evening meal was enjoyable but didn't have everything on menu unfortunately.
