This is a contradictory place indeed. Named after a supposedly historical character in the days before plumbing whose job it was to remove night soil from houses, Dirty Dick's is in fact an upmarket place
There has benn a pub here since 1859, though today it is almost like a bistro. With at least half a dozen real beers at any one time, a dozen or so malt whiskies and a decent wine list, they put a lot of effort into the food. Cooked in-house with a high class menu, they serve food till 10pm during the week, 7pm at weekends. Given the quality it is not surprising that for both food and drink this place is on the expensive side. The decor is a clutter of bric-a-brac on the walls, with old toys, military uniforms and musical instruments; with the low ceiling and subdued lighting, it has a comfortable, almost homely atmosphere. Another place where candles are a fixture, there is what can only be called a candle sculpture opposite the bar which is unique. During the week they do a good trade with business types and tourists. At the weekends they have a more sedate atmosphere than many of the other pubs nearby, with a lot of people booking in for early dinner then staying on to have a few drinks - very civilised. The staff wear waistcoats, and though upmarket it is not obnoxiously so. Even the Fifer had to admit that, grudgingly. They have a couple of outside tables, making it a grand place in the summer to sit and watch the world go by. Definitely a place with a character all its own. Amenities fine and accessible.

Came here for a quick lunch and to try the fried mars bars as we heard they're amazing :) Ordered some nachos and the Mars bar. The wait for a table was very long since but it's not a surprise considering it was a cold Saturday afternoon. Whe sat outside after a space freed up and the wait for our food wasn't long at all. The food was tasty and the mars bar was so so good, highly recommend. We loved the nice touch of the mars bar placement, definitely made us chuckle. Overall a nice experience.
We've had some incredible pub and restaurant experiences in Edinburgh thusfar but @dirtydicksedinburgh has been our favourite by far. Kind staff and patrons, located on Rose Street, dog-friendly, and incredible food. The poshfish and chips were exquisite, haddock, sides of pickled onions and peas, brown sauce for chips. Rose had a Beef Pie with mashed potatoes and beef gravy and kale and roasted parnips and carrots. We had a sticky toffee pudding as dessert. Absolutely stunning tip-to-tail.
What a brilliant interior this pub has. You could sit there for hours and check out all the random stuff up in the walls. Really friendly staff and the selection of whiskeys they have is outstanding! There will be a whisky for everyone here, that’s for sure. Didn’t have any food but it’s smelt and looked fantastic. If you’re in the area it’s definitely worth stopping by.
Really love the atmosphere is pretty unique. Can't forget about the fun name. The steak pie and chips was the first thing I ordered on my trip and it was delicious. Really enjoyed the beer on top and whisky
Great pub on Rose street. Dark and old on the inside, and these are good qualities for a pub. Surprisingly delicious macaroni and cheese, which I didn’t expect from a pub. Large whisky menu.

Scott’s Bar is located on Rose Street; Edinburgh’s main pedestrian shopping street and as such, is busy all year. Steeped in local history, Scott’s Bar is Rose Street’s oldest pub. Dating back to 1790 it is viewed by many as an Edinburgh institution.
