Welcome to the Wasdale Head Inn at the foot of Scafell Pike and Great Gable, the birthplace of British rock climbing.
Welcome to the world-famous Wasdale Head Inn - the birthplace of climbing - dramatically surrounded by England's tallest mountains, making it the finest base for walking and climbing.
The Inn is situated at the head of remote and unspoiled Wasdale, and if you are seeking the superlative this is where you will find it. England's highest mountain, deepest lake, smallest Church, and the original world's biggest liar can all be found in this tranquil corner of the Lake District.
The Inn is managed by Gillian Race on behalf of the owners, Nigel and Lesley Burton.

Great to spend a night in this historic hotel with lots of original features. The staff were lovely but the fish and chips were a bit ordinary. In the morning there was a power outage and disappointed there wasn't a gas ring to boil water for a cup of tea.
It seems to take forever to get here along bumpy, twisty roads by the side of the Water. But well worth the journey which adds to the feeling of remoteness! However, a friendly welcome and roaring log burner were welcome on a bright, crisp late-November day. There's a nice vibe at the Inn, a feeling of there having been many travellers resting here in such a relaxing place. I wish I'd booked a room to stay here as I could very easily have had a pint or three to pass the afternoon and then onto a comfortable and blissful evening. Next time for sure but will arrange the visit for late Spring/ Summer 🌞
We went to the pub a bit lost, cold and wet in rain, looking for instructions , the staff were extremely helpful and guided us. They offered a place near the fireplace to be warm and provided us with hot drinks straight away. We would definitely recommend this place as the staff and food are definitely worth the visit.
This pub is in a stunning location and very isolated. A friendly warm walkers pub. I visited on Sunday afternoon with my two dogs, it's a very dog friendly pub. Had a lovely warm welcome and the service was friendly and fast, can't fault the bar staff. My only criticism would be the Sunday Roast I ordered. I was soooo looking forward to it. It was a really basic lunch and not that great quality for the price. The beef was really tough and the vegetables were most probably from frozen and a bit underdone. I didn't feel it was worth the £15.95 price tag, which was a real shame, the only reason for three stars. After a tiring walk on the fells, I really wanted it to be 5 🙁
What better than a great pub like this after a challenging walk. Really welcoming pub with good pub food and friendly staff. Also perfect for a few drinks the night before a hike swapping adventure stories with friends! Didn’t stay the night but a friend did and said the room was lovely.
