The Compasses Inn is a beautiful country pub in Chicksgrove, a quiet, picturesque village in the heart of Wiltshire’s spectacular Nadder Valley. Built in the 14th Century, the pub retains many of its original features; an old flagstone floor, open ingleno
The main concession we make to modern life is our love of good food, fine local ales and a broad, refined wine list.
Our accommodation – four en-suite bedrooms and a separate, detached three bedroom self-catering cottage – combine all the relaxed charm of country living, with a 21st Century attention to detail. All the rooms have wonderfully comfortable beds, lovely linen, wifi and flat screen TV’s.
This is the second time that me and my partner have visited The Compasses and on both Sundays the drinks, food and service have been outstanding. We cannot fault the roast beef, everything about the dish was perfect! And you really do not mind paying the prices for the quality of food you receive. All of the staff are very attentive and perfectly timed between our 3 courses. The location is in such a tranquil quiet part of Wiltshire, it really is filled with the perfect atmosphere and the perfect balance of country life. It is also dog friendly! If you want to dress up for the perfect date night or get together it really is out of this world! We recommend The Compasses to everyone we know and meet, and we will continue to return time and time again. Thank you again everyone!
My wife and I were on a long walk through the countryside and The Compasses was a suggested lunch stop, and we were so glad it was! The historic pub is lovely and cozy inside with beautiful outdoor space too. We were greeted by the friendly gentlemen working the bar and offered glasses of water right away. We ordered several appetizers to share along with a couple local ales. The food was excellent, with the scotch egg being absolutely the best we have ever had. Great pub and Inn in a beautiful setting.
Fantastic Sunday roast. Generous portion sizes with nice thick slices of meat. Everything on the plate tasted fantastic. Proper old village pub, aesthetically pleasing to look at and be in. Busy day with lots of patrons but the staff were always on top of things and more than happy to help. Defo will be back again.
The Compass Inn was my favourite stay in England. It is adorable! The room came with complimentary homemade cookies. The included breakfast was incredibly generous portions and very high quality. The dinner there was outstanding - we tried various salads, roasts and pudding. All fantastic. Highly recommend the chocolate tart, and Boef. The vegetarian dumplings were fantastic also. Service was quick and the waiters spent lots of time with us checking in. I’d love to stay again
Husband and I went for lunch. Fabulous old building. Friendly welcome. Attentive but not in-your-face service. The food was very good, wines also good. In gorgeous countryside, although that does mean it's a little out of the way. Nevertheless it's worth the drive as the scenery on the way is lovely.
