About us

Welcome to The Church House Inn at Rattery, South Devon. We hope that you will find all that you need to be tempted to visit this very old and characterful country pub. We are the Edwards family, primarily Will and his father John who took over the pub in June 2015, having previously had hotels and pubs in Salcombe and Newquay. Will has now become the 7th generation of landlords in our family, all within South Devon and Cornwall.

OUR MISSION: To run The Church House Inn as a true country/village pub offering a warm welcome, friendly, caring service, fine ales and wines, a well-equipped bar, really tasty food, good coffee, open fire and wood burner, bags of ‘olde worlde’ character and for it to be the ‘local’ for the community of Rattery.

Had a Wednesday night curry for my birthday supper. It was a little quiet but the other diners made for a good ambience and the setting, in the dining room, being festively decked out, and all, was good. Service was always helpful n provided with advice (on the menu) and a smile. Loved the curry and we will b back! 2 starters, 2 drinks and 2 mains came in at c£65. Curry was £15.

A totally superb roast lunch in an atmospheric 11th century inn. Clearly a very popular spot for lunch on a Sunday, so don't expect to walk in without a reservation and find a table. We left at 3.30; our table was ready for waiting customers very shortly after and Sunday lunch was still being served. The carnivores in our group said that the pork crackling was amazing, the vegetarians loved the nut roast. All the vegetables were excellent, especially the cauliflower cheese and (not a common sight) the roasted beetroot. We sampled three of the six or more possible desserts, all scored very highly. Mine was a most enjoyable apple and pear crumble with creme anglaise (custard?). We were happy to forgive fairly slow service, first of all because we didn't want to rush, secondly, because there was a party of 30 people being looked after at the other end of the inn and, thirdly, because the staff were really lovely even though they were clearly extremely busy. We shall definitely be returning; this lunch was easily one of the top three best we have experienced over many years.

Real nice feel to this country pub. Food is top notch, loads of flavour and well presented. Good value for money as all ingredients are local. The staff are always really friendly and helpful. The whole set up is great for family lunch. Beautiful outside space and nice and quiet with lots of seating. Loads of parking outside.

What a find ! On the road to Cornwall and we stumbled across the Rattery Church house Inn as we were hungry. We received a lovely welcome and we were accommodated with a table in the restaurant. The food was superb, great varied choice for all, and the service was attentive, caring but not overpowering, just a nice experience. Thanks to the staff and the Chef for making this a nice surprise.

Popped in for a drink on the way down the A38. Very nice old pub. Start nearly 1000years ago. The local homemade cider was amazing. Sat outside in the sunshine under a big canvas umbrella. Lovely gardens in a quiet village. Well worth a visit. Didn't order any food, but the menu did look good. I'd recommend this pub every time. Lovely, peaceful church yard next door as well.
