About us

Taking on the Black Horse in Standlake in 2019, started our passion for all things pubs. Full of character, this 16th century quaint corner of the Oxfordshire countryside is truly a place to treasure. Throughout the winter we have roaring fireplaces, festive activities, alongside offering the finest ales and hearty warm dishes. Beamed ceilings and a rich solid oak bar, offering tradition at its finest.

Al Fresco dining in the warmer months on our pergola or in the garden, surrounded by our vegetable patch, roaring pizza oven and the songs of birds, a real slice of paradise, no better way to spend the day. We frequently host local live band sessions on Fridays and at weekends, for all to enjoy and using the freshest produce to create outstanding dishes. Quality is at the heart of everything we do.

You are able to book an outside table online for a guaranteed space, however if you have been walking or if you fancy popping down for a refreshing pint and watching the sunset, there are normally tables that we would be delighted to accommodate you on.

We decided to book a table at the pub, due to celebrating our birthdays and wedding anniversary, whilst holidaying in our caravan. We opted for the Black Horse burger, and the 10z sirloin steak, the food was piping hot and was absolutely delicious. The girls on the bar and serving the food were so courteous. We were so glad that we booked to eat here.

Took my elderly dad out for Sunday roast as recommended by a local friend. First impressions are great, a lovely pub, with lots of character, but unfortunately the service and experience took a nose dive thereafter. Although the eating area was not fully booked, we were seated in a small recess, which I guess used to be a cupboard, not at all ideal for a 90 year old, and no offer of alternative seating, even though available. As said by previous guests the service was disjointed and several people attended us (when they remembered) and we had long waits in between, to the point we had to prompt ourselves to ask for the desserts menu. A steak knife would be a good option for the roast beef (poor dad struggled to cut up his meat) and when asked for feedback at the end, felt they are not really bothered or care and were just going through the motions. Told they were ‘short staffed’ but as dad commented the staff had time to chat amongst themselves and with the bar customers! Happy with the prices and food was ok, but overall there are better comparable places nearby who provide a better total customer experience who we would rather patronise.

Decided to book here for Sunday lunch as it was recommended by someone locally and we'd not visited since it was refurbished a good few years back. It's a lovely village pub and we didn't have a problem booking a table online a few days before hand. Food wise, it's five stars but we found it a little on the expensive side. The roast beef was £22 but it was a lovely plate, generous amount of meat, crispy spuds and some lovely seasonal green beans which came from the small garden plot out the back. The kids fish and chips was £10 but was enjoyed by our younger diner. Dessert wise, didn't find the choice very inspiring so we ordered a children's brownie which was £6, only £1 less than the full price menu one. Service wise it was okay but we had 3 or 4 different people serve various bits which I think makes things a bit disjointed and you don't get much continuity. Our bill was also charged wrong as there were a couple of things on it we hadn't had which doesn't close off the experience on a great note. There was also a 12% service charge on all dining bills which is a little unusual for a pub and also increased our spend (not adverse to this as worked in hospitality for many years but prefer to have the choice to leave a tip). We would recommend if you want a lovely Sunday lunch in an equally lovely pub but it was a little more expensive compared to our usual expectations and recent experiences. Not sure we'd return straight away as a few other places in the area that we want to check out or go back to first.

Went for Sunday lunch and the roasts were superb. The staff were attentive and well trained, they couldn't do enough for us. There was a hood selection of ale/lager/stout and wines. However I personally would have like more "wine by the glass" options. General atmosphere was welcoming and pleasant but better music would boost it to next level. I will happily go back.

Visited for drinks on Saturday and for lunch on Sunday as we were staying nearby. Staff were very friendly and really welcomed our dog. We all agreed the roast dinners were the best we’d had, really amazing. Will definitely visit again.
