About us

The Red Kite in Wakefield is a country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Book a table online and enjoy a spot by our roaring log-fire. Or make the best of the British summertime by eating alfresco in our pretty beer garden.

The Red Kite is to be found on the innovative Calder Park. With over 100 acres for wildlife, swans, ducks and other wildfowl are regular visitors. Wakefield is known as the capital of the Rhubarb Triangle, an area famous for its early forced rhubarb. In July 2005 a statue was erected near to the pub to celebrate this unusual claim to fame.

With its smart white walls and slate roof, the Red Kite is a distinctive landmark. You can enjoy a memorable meal here, and the delights of Pugneys Country Park and lakes are almost on the doorstep.

Memorable! Our first visit to the Red Kite, We booked online on a whim after reading the excellent reviews. It was a Sunday lunchtime but I booked at 0900 for a table for two at 1330. We were greeted with a big smile and shown to our table immediately and our drinks ordered swiftly, no fuss ordering the food, and it arrived relatively quickly given it was a Sunday and a large party arrived just after us. Food was AMAZING we had a roast trio, the vegetables, stuffing and trimmings were almost the star of the show, portions are good and regularly (but not too much) check ins with the wait staff were expertly timed. We will be returning

The Red Kite is beautiful inside, very warming, and there are plenty of places to sit. There were 2 reasons why we only gave a 4 star, which were Service Speed and Price. Service was a little slow, and we did end up waiting for a good 20 minutes before we got any orders in and over 45 minutes for the food to arrive. We went on a Sunday (See Sunday Menu Picture) The prices are quite expensive in comparison to others around the area, you can make your own judgement. The food, though, was cracking! (See pictures) I ordered the Signature Burger with halloumi as extra. It was juicy, succulent, and mouth-watering. The plate of Sunday dinner was from the kids' menu, with a great portion size. The other meal pictured was pie of the day (ham and cheese pie) All the food was decent. You do get what you pay for here, but you will need to dig deep in your pockets. I would recommend coming here for special occasions. *Top tip* If you download the Vintage Inns app, you can get £20 off your first meal.

Nice design all in all, a lot of families were there, waitresses were very attentive and kind. I had potatoe and leek soup which was watery and had no spices at all had to leave it and still paid for it which is horrible. Next i had turkey dinner, tasty, really nice but for that money that amount of meat is a joke. My partner had trio meat dinner....tasty but again amount of meat is hilarious. Disappointing really.

Enjoyed delicious sirloin of beef for Sunday lunch & a super tasty banoffee pie for afters. You can never go wrong with a Vintage Inn and our server, Claire, was lovely and helpful. Great location too, as not far off the motorway for a half way meeting point.
