The Volunteer is a Grade II listed building rebuilt in 1897 to commemorate the Sale and Ashton volunteers who gathered in 1803 to fight the possible Napoleonic invaders.
The pub is a hub for drinkers and sports fans looking for a quality pint and weekly entertainment. Raised areas and fixed seating extending into the open space break up the pub to make the interior warm and welcoming. Three darts teams are based here, which makes for some lively evenings.
The popular pub boasts live daily sports entertainment on Sky and BT Sports, ensuring you don’t miss any of the great games in football, rugby, cricket and lots more. You can enjoy an array of monthly entertainment featuring live singers, musicians and karaoke sessions. We also have darts and a pool table.
The oak-paneled, former billiard room upstairs is perfect for private events, from birthdays and christenings to funerals and family gatherings. The Volunteer is a truly traditional pub with a nostalgic nod to its grade II listed heritage.

Called in on way past busy night with dj on everybody seemed happy and enjoying the evening.
Went there at last Saturdays welcoming party best night I've had in Sale for ages place was packed everybody was friendly great atmosphere & no idiots good DJ great landlord & staff!
Went before the new landlord/lanlady came in but at the time it was minging and filthy - The dirtiest smelliest mens toilets ever encountered paint peeling off the walls, dirty bar, cig dimps littered all over the front door - Awful
New landlord October 2023. Now a proper United pub. £2.85 for a good pint of Holts.
New landlady Emma, very nice lady. Good pint of Holts, then was on their lager as they changed the bitter barrel, nice and spacey pub and if its sunny plenty space in rear beer garden. Recommended. Bit far for me but when I'm in the area...
