Wonderful location and good staff. The food doesn’t compare to other local pubs though. Terrible cheeseburger-really dry and tasteless meat. Other mediocre dishes. Beetroot salad was left mostly uneaten. Soufflé and pie were not bad.
The UK, the Cotswolds in particular, are littered with supposedly great little gastro pubs with rooms. From experience, many/most are awful - overpriced rubbish. The Swan, however, is the real thing. Fabulous location, pretty village, lovely old pub, very good food (great full English breakfast) and professional attentive staff. Really, an absolutely spot on experience! I marked the room as 4/5 only because ours needed a spruce up, with some damaged furniture tops by the bed and loose floor tiles in the bathroom letting it down. Nothing that couldn’t be dealt with in a few hours. The bed was clean and comfortable and the towels were just as you would hope. Very nice accommodation and with parking right outside the door, if you arrive in time. This one goes on the list (a short list) of really great places for time away!
Just ate at the pub. Would rate this a 3.5 stars, the dishes I had personally were less than inspiring the flavours lacked depth and the important “wow factor”. The soufflé lacked any real blue cheese taste and the salt and pepper squid was more salad than squid. The salad tasted very much like vegetable oil and no discernible flavours poked through. What I will say to that is the salmon and crab someone else on the table had was very wow and so was the sticky toffee pudding. So picking the right food dish is important. Service was decent enough and they were friendly although seemed we had a different server each time which made it difficult you to know who was working there and who wasn’t. The atmosphere is very nice especially in the cold with a fire. Think some more experience amongst staff could be helpful but I would say there are better local spots for food. During summer this is the place for a drink if you make the drive. For other places I would try the Lamb at Crawley, Carpenters arms and the Highway (although prices increased a lot).
I can't rate the rooms as I did not stay just stopped for food. The place is not the easiest to find which is a plus and a minus. If you are looking for restful place it's definitely that. The service was good with friendly welcoming staff who made is feel nothing was any trouble. The food was fantastic although the menu was very limited and nothing plain for the pickier eater. As was to be expected for good quality food it had a quality price tag. I would recommend a visit if you want some good food in peaceful surroundings.
Owner is always welcoming. Nice location, but up the side of the pub where the tables are could do with something to make it more inviting, hanging baskets or something. Stopped here for a coffee. It's a very small pub. Food is always good though, can't fault it.
