About us

The first pub on the River Thames: a real village pub with cosy corner snugs and log fires, a place for foodies in our stunning garden room overlooking the landscaped beer garden and river also offering a private dining room for families and occasions.

In the warmer months our garden room opens out onto an indoor/outdoor dining patio where you can step out into our stunning garden, half the patio is covered with a fabulous boho safari tent with music playing, festoon lighting, firepits, sheepskin chairs and plenty of blankets for when the temperature drops. This overlooks our flourishing kitchen garden where we grow herbs, some leaves and vegetables for your plate. You can sit back and watch the chef at work in the outdoor kitchen ‘The Trough’ with wood-fired ovens and charcoal, then stroll over to ‘The Watering Hole’ the outside bar serving all your drinks and fabulous cocktails and by the evening you can enjoy the cosy atmosphere of sitting around the firepit and toasting marshmallows.

We are family friendly with an area for children to run around away from the river with table tennis and games to play, there is always someone ready for a game of football or rugby. You can also pitch up on the riverbank and enjoy the view and fields beyond; perhaps try a bit of cray fishing too or paddle boarding.

We are nestled in the pretty village of Castle Eaton on the edge of the Cotswolds between Cirencester and Swindon just off the M4 and A419. We have fantastic circular walks from the pub as well as the Thames Path and we are a great place to stop and grab a bite to eat whether walking the path or canoeing.

We are country pub with a place for foodies, to enjoy a sweet or savoury homemade snack from the bar; or share a variety of small plates or pub classics, including our impressive Tomahawk steak. Alternatively, you can dine in our private dining room and choose from our incredible feast menus.

Our passion is food and creating a relaxed but buzzing atmosphere. All of our herbs and some leaves and vegetables are grown in our kitchen garden. We take pride in locally sourcing meat and vegetables and use freshly caught fish and seafood.

Our impressive gin bar is ever changing and as wine lovers we offer a selection of wine focusing on French, Spanish and Italian (which is where a lot of our food inspiration originates) therefore our wine list complements our menu. Donnington Brewery provide our ales, they still use the 13th century watermill where they began brewing in 1865 using the mill wheel to drive pumps and machinery to brew their beer in the same way 150 years on.

Absolutely adore this place. The best country/village pub for miles. It's a place that once you've been you can't help but to return even for a quick drink. We had Sunday dinner this time, cooked to perfection. Thank you all and see you all soon.

Amazing place. Real fire in winter. Good food and veg from their own plot. Reasonable prices for ale from the settle. Tuned piano, petanque, canoe launch for small fee onto the River Thames. Great welcome for visitors. Car Park to the side. Close to Fairford.

⭕️ Yes, I recommend it! It’s that kind of place which is very, very, very old and I’m saying that because the construction of the building, because of the design (the tables, the chairs, the fireplace) and the smell which you will feel it inside of the restaurant, the terrace. The food was very tasty, very fresh and if I’m not wrong, they are using local ingredients. The waiting time to be seated and to get the food was a bit long, the stuff was very polite and smiling all the time.

We had the most amazing food at the Red Lion in Castle Eaton. This was our first visit after it was recommended to us and it did not disappoint. The decor and ambiance was perfect and we loved the roaring log fire at this Country pub. We had a range of tapas (bits and bobs) and can safely say that the crispy squid was just like we have when we go to the Canary Islands - just perfect and so tasty. The Garlic prawns and scallop dish was incredibly tasty too and the scallops were juicy and sweet. The owner chef has really gone out of his way to get top quality purchase and cook it to perfection. The staff were all friendly and attentive and we cannot wait to come back to this hidden gem.
