The Railway may be conveniently close to Blackheath station, but a long wait for a tardy train isn't the reason you'll find yourself drawn to this cosy Victorian pub. With an almost endless selection of top-drawer drinks to sample and plenty of entertainment during the week, it's no wonder The Railway has a loyal following of both Blackheath Village residents and commuters seeking a sociable post-work pint or restorative plate of pub food.
Went here for dinner on Saturday night before Christmas. It was too loud at the time and didn’t really like where we were seated. Might be a different experience when it’s just normal days. We did like the food and service was okay.
Very lovely and knowledgeable staff (Bash, I think was her name) who gave us some beer recommendations. Reasonable prices and a spotlessly clean pub and toilets. Very good atmosphere, vibrant and lively. Highly recommend if you're in the area.
I have been to this pub many of times- the food is always great. Recently took advantage of the lunch time deal which is a sandwich, chips and a drink for £12- we upgraded ours to the French dip sandwich- worth every penny. Will definitely be having it again for lunch.
Initial impressions were really good, a nice pub, lovely garden and nice smiley staff. We came in for a Sunday roast and we're HUNGRY, we ordered half roast chicken, extra roasties and extra cauliflower cheese as there were 2 of us. It looked pretty good when it came out, a nice heap and we were looking forward to tucking in. We noticed instantly there was no gravy on the plate, unusual for a Sunday roast but this was bought separately in 2 little jugs. So the disappointment started there, the gravy was like water, definitely nothing in it to thicken it, I thought it was going to be some tasty but thin Jus, it wasn't, it was totally tasteless. It looked different to what others had in their jugs on tables being cleared, so I guess they ran out and improvised. Most of the vegetables were blanched at best (I hate my veg overcooked but this was another level) the Yorkshire's and carrots were really good but the chicken and veg needed cooking longer. The chicken was still pretty red around the leg knuckles which left me a bit anxious. The bad bit, we didn't send it back, we were both starving so we ate it. It's worth noting that we arrived around 4pm, so the lunch rush if there was one was over. Still, if you're still doing roasts they should still be appetising enough to bring people back. I'm pretty easily pleased food wise and not a fussy eater. In hindsight I do wish I had pointed out how bad it was. In summary, it's a really nice pub, lovely little garden which is non-smoking, really nice staff but I would most definitely not go back for a roast or recommend it. I'd happily go back for drinks though if I was in the area.
Had a lovely experience. Went with some friends and chatted to the barman (assume GM) extensive knowledge of drinks spoke about lots of things. As working in a pub enjoyed this interaction. Clean toilets cute little vibe
