Built some time after 1773 and certainly long before 1841, The Plough On The Hill was once a traditional home-brew pub with a fairly large capacity for beer production. When the brewing equipment was sold in 1864 it included a copper of 120 gallons.
It features in Alfred Williams' book, 'Villages of the White Horse' and had previously been a centre for 'rustic sports' including back-swording, wrestling and prize-fighting.
Arkell's leased the pub after that date and finally bought the freehold in 1907, just a year after purchasing the nearby Bakers Arms at Badbury.
A major modernisation in 1960, the arrival of the M4 right on its doorstep in 1972 and the addition of a smart extension in 1990 - not to mention, of course, a complete refurbishment as recently as 2016 - have not spoiled The Plough's appeal as a homely pub with honest, home cooking to match.

Three of us enjoyed a meal on Friday, everyone commented on how great the food was. I had the pan roasted Barberry duck breast, and it was glorious. Service was spot on, efficient, polite, and helpful but not overbearing. They welcome dogs in the bar area too, which is very useful.
Food was alright…I think we had super high expectations because we heard so much about their roast. The Yorkshire puddings were a bit burnt if I have to be 100% honest and the food wasn’t too hot. However, staff were amazing and the atmosphere was great too. Parking was a bit scary (for me personally) so I was glad we booked a taxi. Definitely will revisit during summer and give it another try!
Excellent from start to finish it was our sons birthday 🎂 🥳 and it was his choice... WOTTA CALL.... the food was amazing (and I am an ex chef) so trust me if was below my expectations they would not be getting thus review.... however that was not the case the whole experience from the food to the service ... well they nailed.. and we will be going back... gd job 🙌
Order 4 steak and 1 lamb. Food quality overall is ok. But the chips are just average. Staff who took the order seemed in bad mood. Not feel we were welcomed.
Great atmosphere in this pub. We I didn't have a booking for Friday night, but I still got a table. Great tasty food, speedy service, and reasonable prices. Strawberry parfait was just heavenly tasty. Lovely interior and dog friendly 😀 👍
