About us

The pub is steeped in history and would have once been used by drovers crossing the Anglo-Scottish border just a few miles away in The Cheviot Hills.

Today, the pub is a popular village local in a peaceful and stunning location in Coquetdale within the Northumberland National Park. It is dog friendly and very well placed for relaxing or exploring the great outdoors. The pub sells newspapers and magazines from a small shop at the rear and is also an official Information Point for the Northumberland National Park.

The pub has recently been taken over by new owners, Phil and Karen, who have some exciting ideas for its future.

I stayed 3 nights in a classy, brand new studio apartment at The Star for The Harbottle Show weekend and ate at the pub in different locations: inside the main pub; the courtyard, and the breakfast area/restaurant in the converted barn. As I was on holiday, I twice had the nicely-cooked full English, a v light mozzarella salad lunch one day and a variety of main meals: vegetarian pizza; pasta with king prawns, and Sunday lunch. All were impressive, well-presented and filling, though the traditional pizza has a bit too much salt and olive oil and too big an uncovered, doughy edge for me. The First and Last local ales were a pleasant contrast to the bog standard big brewery beers of my local, the unusual Guinness was surprisingly good and the cold Birra Moretti hit the spot on the hot afternoons.

I'm delighted to share my review of The Star in Harbottle! My partner and I celebrated our anniversary with a two-night stay in their recently refurbished barn conversion (dog friendly touches were amazing). The charm of the cozy space was only matched by the warm hospitality we received. The inclusive breakfast was a delightful treat, setting the perfect tone for our days. The main pub's culinary offerings were a true highlight. The Italian selection of dishes paired with British classics created a culinary journey that we thoroughly enjoyed. The impeccable service provided by the staff, including the friendly chefs, made our dining experience even more memorable. Exploring the local area was an absolute joy. The nearby Drake Stone and the historic Harbottle Castle ruins added a touch of adventure to our stay. The availability of these local walks was a lovely addition to the overall experience. All in all, our anniversary getaway at The Star in Harbottle was exceptional. The combination of the beautifully renovated barn, delicious food, outstanding service, and picturesque walks made for an unforgettable stay. We're truly grateful for the memories we've made, and we look forward to returning to this charming haven in the future.

Stopped in for lunch and a pint today and it’s a brilliant and friendly pub. The beer was excellent and the food well above the standard you get in most places - delicious! Great place and highly recommended.

I enjoyed a two night stay in the new accommodation: up to the minute design, comfortable, well appointed, quiet, and no noise from neighbouring rooms. The food and friendly service were also of the highest standard and I'd have no hesitation in coming here again. Highly recommended.
