The Golden Lion Hotel is steeped in tradition and local folk lore having been the premier hotel of the ancient and historic North Yorkshire county town of Northallerton for three centuries.
Situated on the broad, attractive high street on the old Great North Road almost equidistant between London and Edinburgh, it was one of the North’s major coaching and posting inns during the exciting and colourful Stage Coach era. Stabling existed for seventy five horses and famous coaches arrived daily with bustle and thrill including the “Queen Charlotte”, “Wellington” and “Royal Mail”.
Throughout the ages the hotel has been a business and social hub of busy Northallerton hosting bargaining farmers and dealers on hectic market and fair days, great horse and property sales, balls, dances, meetings, concerts, receptions and dinners. For the gentry and officials of the North Riding quarter sessions a renowned “Judges Cellar” flourished with fine wines until the late 1960’s.
The Golden Lion Hotel remains a thriving venue being used as a Wedding Venue, Restaurant, Bar and Hotel. For a truly memorable experience the Golden Lion is the perfect venue.

The hotel is very well positioned in the centre of town. It is a little old fashioned but comfortable and welcomingenough. Pity there is not a Sunday evening restaurant service. Great breakfast. All-in-all I would recommend for a short stay.
From start to finish the long weekend we spent at the Golden Lion for our charity's AGM was brilliant. The staff were excellent, the food was plentiful and delicious, the behind the scenes help we received for the AGM proper and for the members' evening dinner was timely, friendly and very professional. Cannot speak more highly of this remarkably warm and friendly establishment. Breakfast will keep you fully loaded all day.
Went for lunch, it was very busy around 30 minute wait for food. The quality was good and large potion size. Service was very good. The decor was extremely tired and shabby looking, in urgent need of a make over. It let's the place down as the location is fantastic.
We only had lunch. Service was great, helpful and friendly. Olde world style restaurant but bright and cheerful. Not expensive menu. Lamb's liver massive , in quantity and size 😭 are you sure it was lambs ?
So, Hotel parking great at the rear of the venue. Room was a good size for our meeting but looked a bit dated. No bottled water provided or squash so very basic. Coffee n tea also basic and not refreshed mid morning. Unfortunately this may have been down to Public service funding rather than hotel service.

The Fleece is recently restored and under new management. The fire roars, the beer is good, the food good value and straightforward and the atmosphere is friendly, a perfect pub.
