Visited the monument after visiting Love Lily. What a place to go, looks fantastic from the A19, so when we were close by, decided to have a look. Parking was free as it’s kind of just a road. It was covered in snow when I went, but wasn’t too slippery to be honest. It’s quite a walk, and needing a hip replacement isn’t the best going up all them steps, but why not. The views are excellent, the monument itself could do with a clean, the stone is very black and has been vandalised in places. Not with paint, so should easily clean up. One intriguing bit is a door on one of the pillars. Something I shall look into. Not literally, as you can’t see through it. Definitely worth a look if you’re near.
Penshaw Monument is truly remarkable! This iconic structure set against the backdrop of stunning countryside scenery is a sight to behold. The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking and definitely worth the climb. The monument itself stands as a testament to history and architecture, and it's surrounded by delightful walking trails. It's an ideal spot for a peaceful stroll or a family picnic. The combination of history, natural beauty, and the sense of accomplishment when you reach the summit makes Penshaw Monument a must-visit destination. I was genuinely captivated by the experience.
Lovely place to have a wander. Popular with dog walkers, joggers & cyclist's. Lovely views at the top. A nice woods surrounding the monument to walk round .
Free parking. Takes roughly 10 minutes to walk up to the top if you’re going an average pace. Not too strenuous to walk up. Gives amazing 360° views of some of the North East. Definitely worth a visit. You can make your day longer by crossing the road and walking around the lake or by taking a visit to the nearby shop/cafe/tea room for food and a drink.
