Warning for Vegetarians. First impression, it seems like a pub for regulars who appear to like it. The restaurant is dark and gloomy; needs a good clean, doesn't seem to have changed since the 70s. Went for Sunday lunch: the positive is that the food was good and plentiful. However, not at all interesting for vegetarians. There is no alternative to the meat, just a plate of dry veg with undercooked brocoli and overcooked potatoes that looked like pieces of charcoal which seemed to have been selected for the vegetarians as the veg on the other plates was fine I would have complained but had gone as guests of another couple. Would be fairer to say vegetarians are not catered for. Will leave it to the regulars in the future. I don't think the landlord will miss us as he had a disinterested, couldn't-care-less attitude. Overall 3 stars. 4 for food, loose one for vegetarians, 4 for table service, the server was good. 2 for atmosphere and overall ambience.
Lovely quaint pub, the food here was lovely.Friendly staff and a great pub atmosphere that you don’t see very much. Nice to be in a traditional pub rather than a chain!
Wife and I had fillet steak with trimmings chunky steak chips! We eat here regularly but this week steak was exceptionally good. Looking forward to Sunday roast best in town most of the veg are fresh not frozen. Well done Alan (landlord).
Pub itself was ok. Dogs allowed in bar not restaurant. Restaurant looked dark and dingy and old fashioned. Ordered a coke, was asked if we wanted a can of proper coke for £2 or a pint of fake cola for £2.50.. we opted with fake which wasn't actually too bad. Was told 2 4 1 on meals but prices were exorbitant. Gammon was £20 and steaks from £28 upwards. Even a Southern fried chicken burger was £20!! Prices had been put up to reflect 2 4 1 so you weren't getting any offer. Free parking very limited but there is a pay and display right by it. Wont be going back personally.
What a find! You won't find a better quality roast dinner for a tenner on a Sunday. Good choice of meats, plenty of it on the plate. Lovely roast potatoes and gravy and the veg was excellent. You could tell everything was home made from scratch. Little touches like smoked bacon in the creamed leeks, quality cheese sauce on the cauliflower cheese, honey roasted carrots. Highly recommend.
