The Pen and Pencil sits on the corner of Hilton and Tariff Street in Manchester’s lively Northern Quarter. Our bar and eatery is open seven days a week from 10am ’til late.
We take our name and inspiration from the infamous mid-20th Century bar on East 45th Street in New York’s ‘Steak Row’ which was popular with newspaper journalists and ad men – the original ‘Mad Men’.

In all honesty been and tried the bottomless 3 times and it’s gradually got worse every time and we will definitely not be returning ever again. Most of the food was left as the quality was very poor. Multiple items sent back for range of reasons, they can’t even cook a pancake which says it all. The attitude of the management team is also disposable. Multiple tables complaining as they are unable to provide a good level of service. It was for a friends birthday and we were left disappointed that we chose this venue, a mistake we definitely won’t be making again.
I kept seeing this place when passing and decided that I’ll take my friend with me the other week and honestly it was really nice. The staff were lovely, I had a smoke on the water cocktail unfortunately they didn’t have an ingredient for it but the staff recommended something else to put into the drink and it was great. My friend had a Black Forest cocktail and they said it was lovely. The food was really nice we went during brunch so I ordered the breakfast burrito it was delicious, they got the buttermilk chicken burger and again it was fantastic. I have now recommended this place to friends and family and I will definitely be returning.
My wife and I had the best experience at pen and pencil on Sunday 3rd September. The staff and in particular Niall were friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing and fantastic value for money. Thanks we'll be back very soon.
Bar style restaurant with around 10 or so large tables. Table service for food. Evening menu variety is pretty limited, but they have snacks that you can also order. We ordered a chicken burger, and it was ok. chicken wasn't too moist, but it wasn't too dry that it wasn't edible. Decent portion of fries (we upgraded to sweet potator fries), which were a little burnt but not too bad. Overall, it was decent and a good place for some drinks (but you will have to shout a bit )
My review is for the pancakes served at breakfast and lunch time, they have variety choices in the pancake menu, I‘ve tried chocolates 🍫 , Lemon 🍋 and Red Velvet 😋. All of them were very tasty 😋. Over it is Highly Recommended 👍🏻
