About us

Mama Liz’s was born out of a love of Blues, Jazz and the culture of Louisiana and the deep South. A heritage that has arisen from plantation life and the slave trade. Deep routed within this culture is a passion for food, the energy of life itself, which is often a subject within blues and jazz music, referencing corn bread and fried fish, collard greens and pork & beans.

Hardship, oppression and the sheer fragility of life around the bayous surrounding the ‘mighty Mississippi’ (Old Man River) has created a strong love of life which is characterised in the mardi gras atmosphere of New Orleans. Vibrant streets full of the smells of street food and the sounds of jazz and Zydeco bands a true melting pot of international culture a cuisine. Originally a French territory, an antiquated form of french is used by the Cajuns, so french food forms a strong base, with influences from Africa and Spain via the islands of the Caribbean.

The Food born out of slavery is often referred to as soul food, cheaper cuts of meat and offal, molasses, salt pork, corn meal, catfish and game that could be hunted easily all prepared with love and an exotic array of spices from the new worlds.

We have tried to create a small slice of this vibrant culture and food here at Mama Liz’s, so come and try a slice of our southern American pie and enjoy the flavours of ‘The Big Easy’.

Love going to Mama Liz's. Great selection at the bar. The restaurant has the perfect variety of dishes all cooked excellently and terrific value for money. My favourite bit of Mama Liz's is the basement for live music. Great place for a proper close up gig.

I was completely disappointed by the attitude of the Security staff. We arrived about midnight the place was very full and everyone having a great time. A security Gard thought this was a great idea to walk through the crowded room with two cups of coffee in an open mug. He then had the check to accuse me of bumping into him and spilling the coffee on to someone. When I questioned why his coffee was not in a closed cup and why he thinks it’s ok to shout at me? He just continued to still accuse me in an aggressive manner. I clearly pointed out it was not my fault he failed to see this a safeguarding issue and his coffee needs to be a closed cup!!!!!

Fantastic place. Lovely food in restaurant. Great well stocked bar - cocktails a specialty. Downstairs music venue - tons of varied live music. Big beer gardens too.

Restaurant review: Being a fan of Caribbean cuisine, I was very intrigued to see goat curry on the menu, so naturally that's what I ordered... and it was beautiful! Tender, fall-off-the bone meat, perfectly seasoned, nice level of spice, cooked to perfection rice. Extremely impressed! My better half had the chili con carne, this was more akin to a stew (in the best way). Tender chunks of steak, that familiar, homely con carne flavour, complimented with jalapenos and tortillas. Lovely. In summary: Fantastically cooked "soul" food, generous cocktails, a laid back atmosphere and a welcoming and personal service has cemented Mama Liz's restaurant as one of my personal top spots in the area. PS. The local craft ale was an added bonus 👍
