Historic hospitality abounds at The Dog & Bear - a beautiful 17th century hotel in Lenham. The Dog and Bear Hotel in Lenham combines the friendly atmosphere of a local pub with all the comforts of a stylish hotel and restaurant.
Rooms and facilities here have all been recently refurbished to the highest standards, but a sense of history pervades the place too. Originally built in 1602, the hotel was visited by Queen Anne in 1704 - and her coat of arms is still displayed above the door today.
It’s only right then that visitors here get a royally warm welcome, and indeed, whether you’re popping in for a quick pint or checking in for a weekend break, you can expect the same friendly service.
Of course, there’s majestic food and drink, too. First-class ales, world wines and traditional, freshly prepared pub dishes make The Dog and Bear one of Lenham’s favourite destinations for dinner and drinks - with a courtyard garden the crowning glory in summer.

The check in for the hotel was hard to find and none of the staff offered to help us, we walked around the whole building before asking other guests where to go as no staff was available to help. We booked a double room, as we are a couple and paid extra for a better room. It was a standard room with two single beds in it. We were woken up early in the morning, around 6.30 am, by the staff unloading metal alcohol barrels and dragging them into the bar, it sounded like a basket ball court and went on for hours so we couldn't sleep. Breakfast was very slow for very little food and the restaurant wasn't even that busy, must've only been a hand full of tables at the time. The table next to us all had there food served apart from one young boy and he had to have his breakfast alone after his family finished. Overall the stay was pretty bad, poor service, poor breakfast, and a terrible night sleep.
Second time stopping here I'm as many years and it's a nice place! The staff are really friendly and helpful and the food here is proper good food with good portion sizes. Only 2 things that let it down hence the 4 stars, the wifi, even though free, is one of those awful things where you have to put all of your details in (why!?!? Just have normal wifi!) And the rooms are staring to look a little tatty round the edges. Overall would stay again if it weren't for the wifi.
Just popped in for a drink but what a lovely place. Real cosy feel in the bar area with comfy chairs and overhead beams. Good TV to watch the football. Polite friendly staff.
Nice pub and friendly staff who seemed to know their regulars. The food was hot and tasty and not overpriced. A few little things let it down the menus needed wiping over. We eat in the bar and not the restaurant, so this may have been why we needed to get our own cutlery and condiments. The peddle on the bin in the ladies' toilet was broken, so it did not work, and paint work needed wiping over. Little things, but these would not at all put me off visiting again as we very much enjoyed our visit a food 😊
Nice spacious room with a comfortable bed. Lots of choice for breakfast, from eggs benedict, to a standard english or porridge. Evening meal was again really good. A couple of menu items not available but still a good choice, served quickly, well cooked and a good attention to detail. Given the building layout I can imagine some rooms would be a bit noisy, but we had no problems with this. Staff were friendly, but we were never once asked how our food was, would we like more drinks etc, or asked how are stay was when we checked out. It was also annoying to hear the barmaid and housekeeper moaning about the job and the management on our first night while sitting in the bar.
