Situated in the picturesque Cotswolds market town of Moreton-in-Marsh, The Bell Inn has for years been a favourite for those seeking a truly unspoilt rural break combining a menu bursting with fresh, seasonal, locally sourced dishes.
Considered by many to be JRR Tolkien’s inspiration for the ‘Prancing Pony’, Middle Earth’s most famous pub in ‘The Lord of the Rings’, The Bell Inn is a fine example of a traditional coaching inn providing quality food, drink and accommodation in welcoming surroundings.
Popular with locals and tourists alike, and having been taken over by new owners in the summer of 2015, the refurbished pub with its fabulous courtyard and stunning walled garden provides the ideal setting in which to relax and unwind. If you’re looking for somewhere to rest your head, or a base whilst you explore the many local attractions the area has to offer, then our 5 recently refurbished, comfortable en-suite rooms providing a high standard of accommodation are ideal.
Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the principle market towns in the northern Cotswolds situated on the crossroads of the Fosse Way Roman road (now the A429) and the busy A44, providing easy access to Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, Oxford and Bath as well as all Cotswold’s attractions. It marks the meeting point of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire. There is still a busy weekly Tuesday market located right outside The Bell Inn on the High Street – the largest open-air street market in the Cotswolds.
With a warm welcome, superb surroundings, friendly and attentive service – The Bell Inn simply is the best place to be! So come on in and see for yourself… we very much look forward to welcoming you soon.

At £5.30 a pint you don't want Timothy Taylor's to be cloudy. It took the disengaged barmaid 2 rejected pints before she pulled anything passable. She served the first hazy pint without apology but in fairness readily substituted it. The line had been cleaned, she said, but she obviously hadn't pulled enough through to clear them. Expensive and not up to standard. CAMRA?????
A chatty pub that also seems to have some space for those who seek a book and the quiet. Waiting for my train, I had 2 hours to kill. This pub and the lovely folks serving made my evening. Good food and really cool crowd.
We stayed three nights at the Bell Inn as part of our 50th year anniversary trip. We could not recommend the Bell Inn more highly. John and his staff made us feel incredibly welcomed. Our room was comfy, the food was terrific (do not believe those who denigrate British food), and the staff was friendly and attentive. We loved the atmosphere in the pub. JR Tolkien would be proud to see how well the place has held up.
Great bear, friendly staff, and good service. When we visited, the restaurant was closed, but the alternative pizza menu was brilliant. The only sad bit was the lack of a Lord of the Rings information, it's the inspiration for the prancing pony in Bree, and maybe a themed pizza or beer and some info would really add to the experience... but that shouldn't detract from the fact that it's a lovely place, with good friendly service.
Best pub in town without a doubt! Friendly staff, very cozy, nice courtyard and well themed. The map of middle-earth on the wall was a really nice touch. The food was good and arrived swiftly, overall great service. Plus, the pub dog was adorable and friendly too. If you’re ever in the area and considering a pub to visit, The Bell Inn is the only right choice.
