The George of Stamford was - and still is - one of England's greatest coaching inns
The George has distinctive style and ambience that make it truly unique. The Oak Panelled Restaurant, roaring log fires, The Garden Room Restaurant, afternoon teas, the courtyard, bars and lounges all have justifiable fame and popularity. Our forty five sumptious bedrooms are all individual and tastefully decorated, and are the ultimate in refined luxury. We look forward to welcoming you.
A treat lunch for a very elderly lady made super special by staff at The George. We had champagne, a delicious lunch and though they were busy we felt special throughout. A reliably lovely experience, thank you x
Went with a friend for coffee & cake. Great service, smiling staff, lovely atmosphere, free refills on the coffee. Choice of comfy seats and areas to sit. Heated and covered outdoor area with plenty of seating if you wish to sit outside. All very clean. A*
Classic, wonderful hotel in the middle of one of the most beautiful towns in the country. We live just around the corner so we haven't stayed but we so enjoy visiting for breakfast and coffee in the lounge. It's unique and that's part of its charm. 100% different from the modern cookie cutter hotels built these days. Try the breakfast - you won't be disappointed.
So I’ve been coming to the George for years. Known as a prestigious establishment within Stamford that upholds strong values and the need to cater for everyone. I come on Christmas Eve for a few drinks with friends and am met by three requests that cannot be fulfilled. The first is that they no longer sell cigars. Granted that isn’t very important but the George has been the only place that sells a prestigious item. Secondly I ask for a mulled wine of which this amazing establishment has “run out”, can’t make any more at 7pm and had no plan to make any more. Thirdly, I ask for 10 baby Guinness, the answer from the bar staff is… “sorry we can’t because it’s not on the menu” the response from the hotel manager is that we can but not today. So what is it? It’s either not on the menu? Or not today? Bear in mind that the bar is not busy and the staff certainly are not busy. This alone completely undermines the ethos of the George, to cater for everyone’s needs. I’ve been coming here for years and I can honestly say I won’t be coming here again. The service is shocking. And for the price you are paying you expect an extra level of care and experience
We had our Christmas Dinner in the Garden Room. The service was a bit slow to begin with but was fine once they had taken our order. We had a variety of starters. I had the French soup and was pleased that I did, as some of the other starters were quite large. The soup was flavoursome but not overly spicy or hot. Again we had a good variety of mains. The burgers were truly large but I had the haddock and chips. The fish was well cooked and served with what seems to be a homemade tartar sauce. The chips were the semi chunky type and were lovely.
