The Durham Ox Inn is the oldest Inn in Ilkeston and dates back to 1861, and it is said that it also doubled up as the town jail. The convicts were held in the cellars beneath the Inn before being taken through the underground caves and passageways up to St Mary's church at the top of the town. They were then tried at the church, and depending on the severity of the crime, were sometimes hung on the gallows that stood there.
Things have changed over the centuries of course and we now only hang customers who complain or misbehave on a regular basis.......
When we were renovating the Durham Ox Inn our aim was to enhance the centuries of character and charm that were inherent in the building and create a respite from the rigours and chaos of everyday modern fast paced life. Our ambition was that when you walked through our door a feeling of calm would pass over you and allow you to switch off and relax, enjoy a drink or a meal in comfortable unhurried surroundings, and not feel the need to rush off anywhere...

This place just gets better and better. We were there with friends on Saturday evening. The menus are changed each season, so you never get bored and always something new added each season to try too. The staff are equally as good as the food, polite, friendly and knowledgeable of each dish, nothing is too much trouble, the advise of a suggestion of which wine will best compliment your food is a great too. It’s a high end restaurant at very reasonable prices and is our treasure of Derbyshire. Well done on your awards team Durham Ox, you remain grounded despite your success.
Fantastic food and service here, they genuinely look after you. Might cost a bit more than your average chain pub food but you get what you pay for. Plenty of drinks options too which are well priced. Will definitely be back.

Go regular to this place for their tapas nights. Absolutely stunning food. Really get the orders perfect- especially if you have allergies. Wide range of beers and wines, staff are always polite and friendly. You will not be disappointed
Wow! How have I lived in Ilkeston all of my life and never visited this place! I knew it had a great reputation, but I had never gotten around trying it myself. The choice of food was a little limited, but I have to say, all courses that everyone ate in my party was extremely well presented, tasted fantastic, and received favourable comments and feedback. The staff were pleasant and attentative too, making for a great experience. The price was extremely reasonable too. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
