The oldest pub in Bowness and a true hidden gem of the Lakes, The New Hall Inn - best known as the ‘The Hole in t' Wall’ - was built in 1612. Situated in the heart of Bowness within easy reach of the stunning hills and Lakes.
As the oldest pub in Bowness, and a real hidden gem, the New Hall Inn (as it was originally named) soon became known as The Hole in t' Wall thanks to the gap in the brickwork that was knocked through so that the blacksmith could be served a beer while hard at work.
These days, of course, it's not just large men with hammers who can enjoy a pint of Robinsons' real ale. Built in 1612, nothing much has changed, apart from electricity and central heating, and that's the way we like it!
Dripping with heritage and a great tale to tell - from Thomas Longmire (the champion wrestler) to Charles Dickens - the pub has a charm and character you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere.
The Hole provides a wide range of cask ales, good pub grub served all day and an atmosphere that's second to none. There is a patio/beer garden area with heating and a function room for larger parties.
Situated in the heart of Bowness, the pub is within easy reach of the stunning hills and lake.

Absolutely loved going to this hole in the wall, for an authentic old world charm. The pub’s interiors tell the story and the originality of the food makes the experience a memorable one.
Update. Drinks expensive! Ordered a pint and half of Old Rosie cider.....£9.00! Ouch. Food, location and atmosphere great so would deffo recommend. I had the steak and ale pie. The wife had Lamb Henry. Superb!
I love proper old style pubs. This place is fabulous. Visited a couple of times. Very helpful friendly staff. Robinsons beers are not my favourite, but they are well kept. We didn't eat on our visits.
A trip to Bowness would not be complete without a visit to this pub - great character and delicious food. Generous portions especially the steak pieces in the Steak and Ale pie. Pub had indoor and outdoor seating and can get full quickly.
Lovely pub, the staff were so lovely and accomodating. The food portions were generous and tasted great. The pub itself is well preserved and clean. We were a really big group and the food came out so quickly. Everyone had a great time
