I always say judge a city by its steak. So upon visiting Bristol for the first time with a friend, our first port of call was to secure a table for the evening, prior to working up an appropriate appetite with a thorough visit to the Bristol Aerospace Museum. Initially we were drawn to Pasture, but lackluster customer service & a disorganised waiting list were clear red flags on the restaurant. Back to square one & suitably hungry, having now been up close & personal with Concorde for an hour plus, we were still naturally concerned to avoid a tourist trap. As a result, we consulted with some friendly locals & they couldn’t be keener to recommend The Cow & Sow, located in Queen’s Square. And what a fantastic time we had. Perfect service from start to finish, alongside some outstanding food. Knowledgeable waiting staff directed us to share 800g of 35 day aged Chateubriand, cooked medium rare, accompanied by a wonderful Portuguese red. Sides were recommended appropriately & without excess, while we were comforted by the waiter’s assurance that we could always order more as we went. We were left perfectly full (we still had the energy for several rounds of table tennis many hours later) & equally impressed with the restroom facilities, while the buzzing atmosphere in the restaurant left us excited to hit the town. Highly recommend.

This year we booked the Cow & Sow for our Christmas meal with friends. Considering we left it quite late, there was only a 9.15pm table available on the date selected. On the day, we rang them to confirm around 8pm, they told us if we wouldn’t mind coming at 9.30pm instead since they were a little behind in the kitchen. We were happy to oblige and appreciated the staff stayed beyond their closing time so we didn’t feel rushed to finish our meal. Onto the food, the festive sharing board was a bundle of pleasant surprises. First time eating burnt ends - I liked the flavour but probably wouldn’t get this of my own volition. Their butter was out of this world! Pineapple was excellent too. As for the main, I chose to share a bigger Tomohawk steak with my husband for a £30 supplement. This was the disappointment of the meal, some pieces were very dry and tough whereas the inner ones were closer to medium-rare when we’d ordered medium. We were quite stuffed by dessert but managed to finish the crumble. The different textures were pleasing to eat. For £48 per person plus service (and drinks should you get any), it was acceptable but I just wish the steak was done better.

The whole experience here was simply awesome. We visited last night for dinner, and from the moment we entered, we were instant made to feel welcome. Drinks were ordered and delivered promptly, and the food order was equally as snappy. Food portions were good, and the steaks were cooked to absolute perfection. One of our party is a rather fussy eater, but even he was full of nothing but praise. There are a number of good steak restaurants in Bristol, and this one is definitely up there fighting for top spot. Without a doubt, we will return.

Came here on Thursday evening for my birthday meal with my partner. From start to finish the food, drinks & service were great. We opted for a sharing steak with sides and loved the fact you can choose your own weight of cut and with the sides/sauces its a great deal. Our server was Sorcha and she was so brilliant. She was so attentive and great at suggesting starter and cocktail options, even getting me a Prosecco for my birthday 🥺. A lovely friendly personable member of staff which made the evening even better, but all members of staff were friendly & the atmosphere overall was lovely. When we visit Bristol again we will definitely be back!

Definitely our new “go-to” for steak in Bristol. After three starters/sharing plates, a sharing steak with two sides, and two desserts, there wasn’t a single thing we could fault. All the food was impeccable, and genuinely one of the best meals we’ve had for a while. Having visited many places in Bristol for evening meals, including Pasture regularly, this would have to be up there with the best of the best. The service from the whole team was excellent, and the food was to die for. Was nice to see such an extensive choice of starters too, as well as a liquid dessert menu, which I loved the idea of. There’s also a wine club scheme, which was interesting too, and not something you see often. An absolute must visit if you’re visiting Bristol, and a place we’ll definitely be visiting again soon!
