About us

There are some villages in Britain where people are forever "passing through" and Purton Stoke is one of them.

- 65 seat restaurant

- Free Wi-Fi throughout

- Beautiful country setting

- Private Parties

It is almost exactly half way along the road that runs from Purton to Cricklade and The Bell is right beside that road, ready to tempt passing travellers with the promise of good beer, good food and a friendly welcome.

The pub's 65-seater restaurant, which serves lunch and dinner at sensible prices, has always proved especially popular with locals and those from farther afield.

A little bit of history

However, The Bell, which has been a fully-licensed inn for more than 150 years, has not always been such a relaxing refuge. In 1844 the licensee was prosecuted for keeping a disorderly house, but at some later stage the Rev. T. B. Carter became the owner and the good reverend entrusted the lease to Arkell's in 1908 and sold the freehold in 1926.

A complete renovation was undertaken in 2007.

The Bell is a modest little pub but has a character all of its own - more than enough of an excuse to stop off for a quiet drink or a bite to eat.

Lovely welcoming pub on a cold lunchtime. The food was excellent and I had the vegetarian curry, which was very well spiced and very tasty. It was also surprisingly busy for a midweek lunch in January proving how popular it is. The service was great and I will definitely be going back soon.

Lovely to be out with the family for 2nd sitting 15.00 PM lunch. Cheese and biscuits that followed was almost another full meal and totally recommend.

I recently booked a lunchtime family meal for x14. Had excellent communication with Kaileigh in advance of the day and then we were very well looked after by all the team on the actual day of the meal. Attentive but unobtrusive staff, really excellent service, all served within minutes of each other and very tasty food. I had the pheasant pie, it was delicious! Everyone in my party was extremely happy with their meals (a first!). My thanks to everyone involved on the day, I would highly recommend The Bell! 👌

The place's prime location, easy parking, and generous food portions make it a promising spot. Yet, vegetarians and chicken enthusiasts might feel a bit limited in their choices. Despite the slightly cramped atmosphere for larger groups, the cozy ambiance and satisfactory seating arrangements are pluses. The staff's friendliness adds to the experience, although there is room for service improvement. With an average spending of £20 - £35 per person for a starter, main, and a drink, I am certainly looking forward to revisiting the place in the future. 😇

Lovely food as expected as it was just first time here after being recommended by lots of friends. Lovely staff and very quaint inside. Not a huge choice on the menu but nice food nevertheless. Reasonably priced and will come back to try the Sunday lunch menu.
