The Bear & Staff is a handsome historic 19th century inn situated in the picturesque centre of Gateacre. The pub is perfectly situated for exploring the impressive architecture of Gateacre which has over 100 listed buildings.
Three of the most prominent are within just 200 metres of this attractive pub restaurant. The impressive timbered Grade II listed 28 Gateacre Brow initially built in 1889 as a telephone exchange was designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas the acclaimed architect behind The Royal Liver Building. Just around the corner on Sandfield Street lies Gateacre Unitarian Chapel an impressive brick chapel from 1700 nestled in attractive grounds. Grange Lane meanwhile contains Gateacre’s sandstone ‘Paradise Cottages’ constructed from rough sandstone in the early 18th century.Whatever your reason for visiting this beautiful part of Merseyside The Bear & Staff is a wonderful setting for enjoying delicious traditional pub food and a bottle of fine wine amongst an attractive and green area.
Place was freezing and looking at previous reviews this wasn't a one off. Food was average prices excessive for what you got. Should have been warned no heating no explanation no apologies. A very disappointing visit spoilt a catch with a friend. Would not recommend.
Room was absolutely freezing. Place not busy on arrival. Waited 20 minutes to place order, food arrived missing the roast potatoes, some were brought out separately but were rock hard. All the food was served on cold plates and the veg was frozen not fresh. Asked for extra gravy which arrived after we finished eating. We were asked if we wanted a pudding and brought a menu, nobody came to take our order so we got the bill and left. Very disappointing.
Staff let us in without a reservation which was nice. The mixed grill, garlic mushrooms, cherry bakewell and sea bass with scallops were boss. Dan served us and couldn't do enough to help us or make us feel more welcome. Cant wait to get back their
no heating in whole building. No hot water. Electric heater By our table. Everyone one of us sat at our table was so cold, my daughter suffers with bad asthma tonight being so cold to and coming in to eat food and place was so cold hasn’t helped her! She come home unwell! Take my little girls toilet and they was even colder no hot water, also as a manger myself we was not told that there was not heating. Service was very slow considering it wasn’t even busy? This meal was ment be nice family meal for my mum birthday. Her food was not cooked right and then she had to sit and wait for her food be cooked then had eat by herself! Service was awful we barely had anyone come to our table we wanted dessert but got to a point that I ended up cutting my mum cake and giving it out because no one come over. Also waited while for someone take food order, server then told us that we had a pre order witch we didn’t. From start to finish my whole experience here was awful. I will be contacting manager to speak myself with them I never leave reviews but in this case I have had to because this was worst experience I’ve ever had at restaurant.
Had a lovely lunch today. They do a really good steak, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The mini pud with hot drink was very good. Pete and colleagues looked after us very well and couldn't do enough to make our experience the best, thanks Pete for all your help.
