City Tavern, established in 1923 in a historic Tudor façade building, was one of Newcastle’s most famous pubs. Since then it has undergone several name and style changes, until Spring 2014 when we brought it back to where it all began.
This iconic Newcastle building, situated at 10 Northumberland Road, was built in 1872 as stables/livery. Through it's history it has had many uses including office accommodation and a garage (Adams 1918-1922). In 1923 the front elevation was remodelled with the now famous Tudor façade. From that date it was operated by local company 'Carrick's Dairy Ltd.' (1925-1951), followed by a restaurant named Cottage Restaurant (1951-1959), then as the well known Carrick's Café (1959-1962). The premises remained as a café/restaurant between 1962 and 1971 under the ownership of Carrick's and was called Tilley's Café.
In 1971 the property became one of Newcastle's most famous pubs (City Tavern) and has since undergone several style and name changes. In spring 2014 City Tavern will regain the original pub name and be transformed into the city's most sumptuous venue providing laid back comfort, good food, good ales, and good friends.
A genuinely brilliant pub which we found on our trip to Newcastle. We're now really wishing that it was more local to us. It's dog friendly and they even thought to bring him a bowl of water and a dog chew along with our food. The food was brilliant; if you're coming around Christmas time then we would recommend the one-pot pie. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Clean, cosy and just a really pleasant meal.
On the outside it looks lovely, same goes for the inside. Didn't think the staff was overly friendly. Ordered drink and food. Thought the food took ages coming, I even chased it up. Food was pricey but tasted nice, Although don't think you got great amount. Decor nice and it was nice and clean. Womens toilet were upstairs while gents were downstairs. Has baby changing facilities and accessible toilet in same place but I never saw accessible entrance.they were clean and tidy They have child's highchair. They also have a beer garden and little seating area outside to the front building.
This place is a hidden gem. It's beside Primark and looks like a small pub. Inside is like a TARDIS it has wee nooks and crannies, bar upstairs outside "garden" with movies on show. Great selection of beers, food was excellent, staff very friendly. It's very dog friendly too.
Walked in and managed to get a table at 1200 on Sunday. We had a full English and a chicken burger. The quality of the food was amazing. Good price for a good portion, the staff were lovely and there is a really well stocked bar. We didn't have our dog with us, but it's totally dog friendly - treats and water bowls available. I also loved that there is a borrow box of reading glasses on the bar!
What a hidden gem! First time in here today and it definitely won't be our last. Deceptive from the outside but once you step inside it just has a sort of homely and cosy feel' to it. Food was exceptional - fish finger sarnie ( all homemade ) beef & ale pie ( in a traditional pot with a nice big puff pastry lid) and a classic beef burger. Everything was spot on and all plates went back empty.
