About us

Whether a visitor to the beautiful Western Lakes and coastline, a discerning business traveller to Sellafield, or simply looking for high quality food and drink at reasonable prices, then the White Mare Hotel and Restaurant in Cumbria has everything you are looking for.

Relax and enjoy the warm, friendly atmosphere and peaceful surroundings of our fully refurbished traditional Coaching Inn, nestled between the two small becks that run through our delightful village.

Re-opened in May 2015, after a £400,000 make-over that saw the entirety of the White Mare being stripped back to the bare walls and fully re-floored, we now offer bar and restaurant menus on a daily basis, a well stocked bar and Executive level en-suite accommodation, all in fully redecorated and refurnished interiors.

The restaurant area has a new fireplace and there is now a viewing hatch to the kitchen from the lounge which retains its beamed ceiling and open fire. The bar itself has been renewed and glass panelled doors have been installed leading out to a new external covered seating area. The bar has another fully functioning open fire and viewing access to the cellar. There are two Sky TV channels showing in the bar, covering all major sporting events.

A dividing screen in the restaurant area provides private conferencing facilities, fully equipped with projector and screen and the full room can be hired for functions of up to 50 people.

Our spacious Executive bedrooms have been fitted with brand new bathroom suites and come with all the luxuries that you would expect. There is free Wi-fi Internet access for all our guests.

We are ideally located less than two miles from the Sellafield site and only 10 miles from Wastwater, arguably the Lake District’s most tranquil setting, and 9 miles from the Georgian harbour town of Whitehaven.

Our objective at the White Mare is to make you feel at home and provide you with hospitality the way it should be.

So call us today if you are looking for accommodation near Sellafield or the western Lake District, bar meals or high quality restaurant cuisine in the hidden gem of West Cumbria.

Great pub, good to see it being a success after being told the story both village pubs shutting down. Good beer and great food

Booked a table for a meal. Waited an hour for our meals to arrive - the restaurant was not busy and when they did arrive not only was the order wrong but my granddaughters burger was not cooked - raw in the middle - my Mediterranean tart was cold in the middle. We had to leave our meals as my granddaughter felt physically sick biting into a raw burger. Was the only place to eat in the village but would not eat there e er again. Consequences of eating food not cooked properly are unthinkable.- to your reply - yes at 6:30 I was told we would have to book and you did not have availability until 7:30 which we took and came back at that time. I was NOT told that our order would then take an hour to be served. Apart from the time issue it does not deter from the fact the burger was not cooked properly leading to my granddaughter being unwell.

Called in here at 12pm before a house viewing. Lady managing bar was very friendly. Great to see gluten free sandwiches and toasties on the menu, so nice to see pubs starting to cater for those with a gluten intolerance. When my gluten free toastie came, the chef had decided it looked very small and so had made an extra one for me, which was so lovely. We will definitely be back if we manage to secure the house we are viewing
