A quintessential old English pub set in the heart of the medieval citadel of Rye, The Standard has always been favoured by residents and visitors alike as ‘the local’. Part of the fabric of the towns close knit community a personal, relaxed and warm welcome awaits you.
The oldest part of the building dates back to 1420. Originally two separate dwellings (note the two front doors) it was merged and became licensed as The Standard Inn around 1600.
Not having been subjected to the ‘modern wine bar’ or ‘theme pub’ treatment it still holds all of its original charm and character. The pub is run by landlord Jonathan Breeds who’s family can be traced back in Rye several centuries.
We believe that when visiting such a unique town, you should feel part of it and experience its living history.

It’s central in Rye. But we paid £24 just for two tiny bits circled with purée clauiflower and I avoided the chilli oil circle. Because the chillies that put on the skins of the sea bass. Made my nose really itchy. So I was slightly sensitive to it. There was no extras with it so we bought winter greens and it was only cabbage. Everything was tasty though. The staff were helpful.
Compact, busy and great atmosphere. All staff are welcoming and keen to make your experience a good one. Tables cannot be booked and are allocated on a first come basis and is busy from 6pm. Have a drink at the bar whilst you wait for a table to free up or jump into one of the heated pods in the garden if one is available.
Lovely cosy pub for the winter evenings. Food was OK, nothing overly memorable. Service although very pleasant was slow and all over the place, had to keep asking for drinks we'd ordered, sides didn't arrive and another tables drinks were on our bill which took an age to sort! We were not staying in the hotel.
We didn't stay here during this visit to Rye but have done in the past and this is still one of our favourites but we did not book in time. Despite being in a pub, the rooms are quiet and cosy. The staff are excellent and breakfast is great. We always make a point to eat here at least once during our stay and it never disappoints. Pie is always a favourite with hubby.
The Standard Inn is way more than an Inn. This was the best dinner we had during our entire England trip, and that’s saying a lot, because everything was great. Awesome atmosphere, great food and enjoyable staff. Definitely stop by for a nice and warm pub feel, with high level cuisine.

Our food is sourced locally where possible and our menu changes from time to time depending on the availability and seasonality of certain foods.
In the evening we also offer a slightly different menu with more substantial meals. All items are individually priced but we also do 2 course evening meals for £12.50 per person or three courses for £15.50 per person.
