About us

Welcome to The Shakespeare

You will find The Shakespeare in Lower Temple Street Birmingham within a short stroll of New Street Railway Station, Alexandra Theatre and Bull ring Shopping Centre - however you won't find another like it.

Step in to discover a traditional pub of unique character, revered for its eclectic range of real ales and its quality pub food, which are served, as they should be, with a generous measure of famous British hospitality.

A fascinating past

Situated on Lower Temple Street, The Shakespeare is a Victorian building very much at the heart of the city and part of the hubbub of its daily life. Its proximity to New Street has ensured that Lower Temple Street has always been busy and present to a wide variety of trades over the years.

Birmingham has developed dramatically since its early days which, around the time of the Domesday book (1083-1086) comprised 480 acres of land and was worth 20 shillings (£1). By the time of the English Civil War in the 17th century, Birmingham had become an important manufacturing town with a reputation for producing small arms. Arms manufacture in Birmingham became a staple trade and was concentrated in the area known as the Gun Quarter. The famous gun makers W. Powell and Sons, founded in 1802, were located close to Lower Temple Street, on Carrs Lane.

One of a kind

The Shakespeare is one of many rare gems in the Nicholson's collection of great British pubs, reputed for their distinctive buildings, intriguing history and vibrant atmosphere.

Absolutely fantastic pub! The food was superb. I had the steak and ale pie and it was delicious. Beer is great. I recommend the Nicholsons Pale Ale. 🍺 The girls behind the bar were great and really friendly. Football was on the telly too. Only thing I would say is that the men’s toilet door needs fixed as it’s missing from the cubicle but I’m sure that’s getting sorted.

Had a wonderful dinner with the friendliest service from Lizzie! Food was super delicious - the award winning steak pie as well as the fish & chips (plus scampi) were excellent. We also loved the sticky toffee pudding. Kids meals were a great value. Definitely a great place to hit up for some traditional pub fare!

A beautiful pub serving amazing food in a beautiful building. It has a lovely outdoor seating area also. TVs showing sport if you want it and nice clean toilets. Staff were amazingly friendly and professional. Famous for their pies which I will be trying on my next visit for sure. Close to the city centre library, town hall and rep. A really lovely break in our journey back home. Thank you so much.

The Nicholson's spring / summer menu embraces everything that is "Great" about the Great British Pub whilst also offering you something a little more special to really treat yourself. With such a varied array of dishes you can sit in the comfort of our pubs to enjoy them or enjoy the same great dishes in one of our superb dining rooms where our staff will wait on you hand and foot.

The finest Nicholson's Classic dishes include something for everyone, from our hand ale battered fish and chips or award winning Gloucester Old spot sausage and mash to succulent wild boar and chorizo burgers.

Fancy something a little lighter for the warmer days? Then choose a meal from our great fish and salad section including dishes such as grilled Sea bass fillets with a tomato dressing, a tiger prawn and chorizo or chicken and bacon salad.

As ever you will still find the juiciest steaks, aged for 21days and cooked just how you want it, but to really get your taste buds going, you can now also add a half rack of sticky Crabbies ginger beer BBQ ribs.
Lipsmackingly good!!
