Dating back to the 16th Century, The Plough was formerly a staging post for London coaches and is one of the oldest pubs in the area. It is said that in 1643 a wake was held here for John Hampden by his beloved Greencoats, whilst escorting his body back to the family home at Great Hampden from Thame, where he died following the Battle of Chalgrove. Today landlords Steve & Sharon Hollings have embraced the pub's rich heritage & traditions whilst making sure The Plough offers all the modern facilities customers expect. They extend the warmest of welcomes to all who pass through.
I went there yesterday for lunch with my wife, 2 children and two adult friends. The food was okay but a bit pricey for what it was. The service was average; we waited on more than two occasions to get some attention and order. My main issue was that my daughter’s meal was brought out last (instead of first, which in my opinion should be the standard for children’s meals).
Extremely pleasant rural pub in a great location, below the Chiltern hills. The beer was good and they serve a reasonable selection of classic pub food. The service was good and our waitress was attentive. Dog friendly too.
A very good pub/restaurant in a great setting. The menus are really good allied to good service.
I was told that the food was gluten free and that the chips were in a gluten free fryer, but they are not. It has made me very ill EDIT: Thanks for the reply. I sat at the round table adjacent to the bar at around 1.30 on Saturday and ordered the Ham, Egg and Chips. I can't find an email address on your website, but if you could provide it I can give you further details.
I think this is the place where David Cameron came for fish and chips with the Chinese Prime Minister. I might be wrong. Anyway, it was a biker stop off - nice to sit outside and enjoy the country. Worth a visit, it's a bit tucked away. You can walk up the hill to get to the white cross. A good hike and you can see for miles!
