About us

Situated in the heart of Kendal town centre The Shakespeare was first offered to let in 1858, and was described as “a Kendal house known by the name of The Shakespeare Tavern with brew house, stables and hayloft”. Throughout the years it has been known and documented as an inn, a tavern and a hotel. The pub sits at the entrance to the old Shakespeare Theatre which closed in 1930’s and is still a popular feature.

The pub is a cosy traditional venue which boasts sofas and comfortable seating, pub games including darts, pool, and dominoes. Round the back you'll find outdoor seating and a secure private car park.

The additional rooms were built as an adjoining building in 1936 and have been subsequently renovated and updated to a consistent high standard throughout the years up to the present day. All rooms are tastefully decorated and all are en-suite.

The Shakespeare Theatre was built in 1829 and was Kendal’s first purpose built theatre. It was designed by John Richardson, a local architect. Edmund Kean, a nationally famous actor played at the theatre in 1832.

Both poverty in Kendal, and pressure from the Quakers, Presbyterians and Temperance groups, forced the theatre to close five years after opening. It continued in use as a ballroom, before being converted to the New Life Community Church in 1994.

For my 80th birthday my family arranged a surprise weekend away in Kendal at the Shakespeare Inn which was idyllic. We had a fantastic time and I thank the management and staff for taking good care of us. I highly recommend it.

Great service, wonderful food, very kind and attentive staff. My family and I were welcomed, and looked after so well. Even our little doggy got a biscuit! Thank you, we will be back !

Have had a fantastic experiences at the Shakespeare Inn. We booked for 15 people, which included various dietary requirements and allergies, and they were so accommodating. I have been so impressed with there communication. The Shakespeare has a friendly atmosphere, everyone was welcoming and helpful. The food was excellent, not a single person had a bad word to say. Everyone was stuffed and we had to roll home. Would highly recommend!!!

Nice little bar. Reasonable price. Good atmosphere. Very busy little bar as it was Kendal music festival. We had our drinks listening to a great sax and keyboard duo. Loved the atmosphere and felt comfortable.

Pub restaurant based in the centre of Kendal doesn’t look much from the entrance but inside it’s a very clean and tidy pub. Staff were friendly and food was great. I ate the southern fried chicken burger which was different and adding the sweet dip to it made it so much better. Family all enjoyed the drinks and food they had too.
