The Ye Olde Mitre in Hatton Garden has been featured in a couple of legendary blockbusters. The Ye Olde Mitre takes traditional pub-keeping seriously, with a wealth of real ales on tap, great home-made bar snacks, and a friendly team behind the bar.
Built in 1546 for the servants of the Bishops of Ely, The Ye Olde Mitre is famous for having a cherry tree, (now supporting the front) that Queen Elizabeth once danced around with Sir Christopher Hatton. The pub was actually a part of Cambridge (Ely being in Cambridge) and the licencees used to have to go there for their licence. Set in a part of London steeped in history, it's near where William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered at Smithfield, along with martyers and traitors who were also killed nearby.
Awsome little pub - only challenge to you is finding it without cheating using your mobile. A good selection of beers. Highly recommend their cheese toasties. 👍
A blink and you'll miss it historic pub tucked down a narrow alleyway in Hatton Garden, the Ye Olde Mitre is a gem. The food menu is simply scrawled on a chalk board by the bar and they do toasted sandwiches, pork pies and scotch eggs. A definite must visit if you like a cosy boozer with plenty of character.
An absolute, if always overcrowded, gem. The pub is one of the oldest pubs in London (around since 1546, see pic) and once you are there you can see this. The architecture, the location... all just fit. The staff are lovely and they always have proper ale on tap with many interesting guest beers. They also do good food, I am told. I would recommend it but, given how busy it is every day... perhaps I shouldn't or I won't be able to get a seat any more 😁
On our recent trip to London, we stopped by this pub because of the story of Queen Elizabeth and the Cherry Tree. It was such a cool and interesting place. They actually have the trunk of the cherry inside the pub. There's so many cool photographs on the walls showing times gone by. The bartenders were super friendly and told us many things about the pub that we knew nothing about. Definitely add it to your "to-do" list the next time you're in London, you'll love it!
If you're walking along the street you would never know the gem of a pub is there. Hidden down an alley, this place is one of Londons best and oldest pubs. Good chive of drinks and the food looked nice but didn't have any on our visit. If you can find it the you definitely need to visit, you won't be disappointed.
