From humble beginnings as an 18th Century drinking inn, The Woodman Inn has provided sustenance to thousands of travellers in a tranquil, rural location in the tiny hamlet of Thunderbridge, near Huddersfield.
This historic village lies within a conservation area, and the hamlet was originally believed to have been named after “Th (e)” under bridge, to distinguish it from a second bridge further up the valley.
The first landlord was one Henry Wickman, and in a nod to our historic heritage, we have named one of our beautiful executive bedrooms “The Wickman Suite”.
Jump forward 300 years and The Woodman has been transformed into a 21st century modern restaurant/hotel which prides itself on serving fresh succulent local produce, perfectly cooked and served by our friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Downstairs our traditional English pub offers an extensive selection of award-winning cask ales, a superb choice of fine wines and a menu of cheeky cocktails.
Today’s diner expects exceptional service and a convivial, comfortable, relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and we at the Woodman Inn strive to achieve perfection.

Stayed this weekend for a night away and a meal out. Place was epic! Even managed to accidentally pick our own room 😁 Is it a 6 or 9 😆. Service was outstanding, the gentleman taking control was fantastic 💪 The meal in the restaurant was amazing and the breakfast was out of this world. Very highly recommend. We were fortunate enough to find the Woodman Inn for our wedding in December 2023. We had a first class experience from start to finish. Our events manager Kieran was so accommodating- if you're looking for a relaxed and flexible venue then look no further. The staff team were incredible- every single one of them. Nothing was too much trouble. Our guests spoke so highly of their experience- from the rooms, to the food and everything in between. The catering was excellent- tailored to dietary requirements without any fuss. The location is perfect- tucked away without being in the middle of nowhere. Our day was seamless, everything was so well organised and we didn't need to worry about a thing. If we could get married again, we would choose The Woodman without hesitation. What a place!
Stayed in a room in a separate building on the opposite side of the road. It's been converted from an stone cottage and done well. Our room had a view out over a stream - v. pleasant. Main issue preventing 5 stars is the sound proofing: other guests coming and going and snoring from the room above very noticeable. Full Yorkshire breakfast was excellent.
The woodman inn hosted my wedding in November and I have nothing but high praise for all of the staff and the day it’s self. From the first show around to the day it’s self everything was taken care of. Kieron our events manager was incredible, happy to work with us to make our wedding vision come to life and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The room looked amazing throughout the day, the food was outstanding. All of our guests have raved about the food especially. The wedding day was seamless I didn’t have to worry about a single thing all day. The rooms we stayed in after were comfortable tastefully decorated and we all had a good night sleep. My parents loved the dog friendly room and the little dog treats that came with I honestly couldn’t thank the staff enough for everything they did. If anyone is thinking of booking a wedding there you won’t regret it. Special shoutout to Kieron and Ben who were just amazing.
Excellent place done out beautifully. Great breakfast with lots of choice, included in the price, however for £154 I would expect this. White company products in bathroom, good selection of tea, coffee, biscuits and water in the room, very comfy bed, had evening meal which was equally lovely. Very nice, kind friendly staff
