About us

An Inn has stood on this site since the 18th Century and was originally known as the Stourton Inn. In 1815 the name was changed to the Spread Eagle.

The gate piers with the Eagle heads, the walls between the memorial hall and the Inn date from the early 19th Century when the courtyard was created roughly in its present form to service the Inn.

When first constructed in the mid 18th Century the Inn building consisted of the Front Range with Flemish bond brickwork facing the yard, appearing much as it does today. The two rear wings were built of stone at the same time and together with the Front Range formed a u-shape. To this mid 18th Century building, the kitchen area was added along with the rear hall and bedrooms above probably at the turn of the 19th Century.

Although altered, the Inn retains many fine architectural details including Georgian and Regency fireplaces, some 18th Century door cases and original sash windows.

The National Trust acquired The Spread Eagle in 1946 when the Stourhead Estate was given to them by the Hoare family.

On a busy night, Julie helped us find a table for 6 people at the last minute. It was brilliant and ideal after seeing the Christmas lights in the grounds of Stourhead. Good food. Good atmosphere. And such helpful people. Special thanks to Julie & Harmony. Would definitely recommend

Called in for lunch during a visit to the Stourhead Estate. Great welcome and outstanding service. Ate in the restaurant but tables also available in the bar. Quite a varied menu as well as a specials board. Steak & ale pie was superb as well as the chestnut tart. Meal finished off with great coffee.

Very small tables for someone of my height i couldn't sit with my legs under the table, also the menu is pretty small and i had to have a starter as a main as the mains listed were not that desirable. Forgot a drinks order once as well. Great location though for a walk.

Stopped here for lunch whilst visiting the beautiful gardens, what a disappointment. Was told all tables in dining room were reserved yet when I have telephoned on previous occasions to reserve a table I was told that they don't take reservations!!!!, so which one is it? Found a table in the bar food ordered paid beforehand with a service charge added to the bill ( what for do you not pay your staff minimum wage) 35 minutes after ordering 2 burgers and chips still waiting not impressed especially as we have already paid for a service. Once the food arrived it was certainly not worth the almost Β£17 each, burger pink in the middle, about 10 chips with peelings still on, no service to peel them, when asked for tomato sauce was brought an empty bottle, food not enjoyable. Shall not be visiting the pub again. I would certainly not have paid service charge if I had paid after.

This place is a real treat to visit. A very happy cheerful landlady and staff. We were made to feel welcome as soon as we stepped through the door. The hot stone steaks we ordered were perfect as you can cook your steak to the exact way you wish to eat it. The whole pub was clean and tidy and the cider was fantastic. I recommend the spread eagle inn for a whole new eating experience. We shall return regularly from this day onwards. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸΊπŸ€—
