About us

A true traditional Welsh pub, in a great Welsh town.

Built in 1752, the White Lion Royal Hotel retains its charm, character and heritage offering a large restaurant, ideal for functions with a separate meeting room. The bar has a welcoming opening fire, as well as showing live sports on TV.

Our fine selection of real ales is complimented by an extensive menu, featuring a great range of grills and pub classics.

Explore the many lakes and mountains that North Wales has to offer, take a trip up the Snowdonia Mountain Railway, or simply enjoying a relaxing fishing expedition at Bala Lake, our friendly team and welcoming atmosphere are always here ready for you on your return.

We are also proud to offer a fantastic range of function and event packages to cater for all occasions. From formal, three course sit-down meals with arrival drinks, to an evening buffet with accompanying entertainment, we would love you to see what we have to offer.

Stay there for a week and if you want service for your money then avoid this place. Let's start with the room. The room is spacious but you can hear everything: people walking on the upper floor, the street as well as the noise of the pub below. The room itself is not clean, the bathroom had dead insects in it (does your room service not spot this?). The doors of the room squeak and when you stay there several nights the room service will not vacuum clean the room (they said it's the rule when asked). They will only make the bed and maybe replace the towels. That all is already reason enough not to stay there for several days. Also if your room is done by 1pm you can be lucky since it takes the service ages to do so. The breakfast was included in the price and the biggest disappointment. The breakfast was different every day, one day there was a menu you were able to choose from, offering different types of eggs and English breakfast, for the next days the menu was not available anymore cause the kitchen was closed and the chef didn't show up. Instead you were able to choose from toast, 3 spreads and cornflakes. I'm sorry but if I go to the supermarket I get a better breakfast. It's fine that this type of breakfast is offered on a bank holiday like the 25th of December but after that I expect a normal service. The only nice thing about the breakfast was the lady serving tea and coffee, she was really nice and attentive. The pub downstairs serves good food for a reasonable price (if the kitchen is open, which again is a gamble) and the service was always nice. Dogs are allowed in the pub. The same goes for the hotel. Overall a really disappointing experience and not worth spending the money.

Stayed here for 3 nights in December 23. Lots of negatives: • staff couldn’t supply me with an extension lead for kettle in room… had to use kettle on floor. • from shower I had fantastic view of high street as window blind was broken. • chunks of chocolate discovered under table (when trying to access electric for kettle). • wasn’t able to put bar payments on room bill. • countless fire doors not fully closed due to poor fitting frames and carpet. • staff unable to print me a room receipt. • I was pleased that I had ear plugs… they reduced the noise of people screaming and scrapping on the high street during the night. • staff not particularly customer focused… no warm welcome or ‘was everything okay during your stay’ question on leaving. In summary: Grim The only shinning light was the lady staff member running breakfast… really lovely and very attentive.

Stayed here 1 night so we could have some craft beers locally. Room was great and the service exceptional, especially the lady who's around at breakfast who brought our pooch 2 cooked sausages for breakfast! Was only £40 for the night! Amazing value!

Old building in a good way. Good size room, comfy large bed and very large bathroom. Great size shower. Toiletries on dispensers. Cold outside but room warm despite radiators seemed not to work. Wardrobe was old style but lovely to me and good size. Plenty of coffee tea and milk sachets. As you walk towards room, there are are old furniture with some traditional Welsh pottery. Gives a lovely atmosphere. The restaurant area is large and extended in several areas. Food timings a little restricted. Good selection of drinks. The breakfast menu was extensive and the "main" served and with good portions. The rest self-service. Very good value for money and attentive team. Very clean and welcoming. Great location in high street. Parking in the hotel will be tricky in season sharing the "hotel"'s guests with "restaurant"'s guests spaces.

Well I just want to say what a welcome. Just went in with the 2 dogs expecting to be seated somewhere out of the way on bare floors as usual. But we were told they were very welcome and could sit anywhere. Food was fast, lovely and beautifully presented by very happy staff. The place was clean and food was delicious and well priced. The dogs were offered treats and to my amazement a bag of treats were delivered in a delightful doggy bag. Enough treats for a week. If you go to Bala go visit this pub. Youll be knocked out by the hospitality. If i am looking to stay in the area I will definitely be putting my head down in this hotel. Cant fault it at all!!!
