About us

The White Lion at Childer Thornton offers everything a country pub should; comforting home-cooked food, quality ales, characterful surroundings and a warm welcome.

Described as a hidden gem in rural Cheshire, The White Lion is a friendly village inn with large open fires, wooden beamed ceilings and cosy snugs. It has been standing pride of place in the village of Childer Thornton since 1724 and welcomes both the local community as well as visitors to the area.

We are a popular food destination throughout the year; cool winter evenings can be spent in front of our log fires, and our expansive beer garden was made for summer days! Our menu is filled with home-cooked, great value pub classics such as fish and chips, roast dinner and pies. Take a look at our food page to see what takes your fancy.

Not feeling peckish? Come and join us for a drink; after all we do have a pretty good selection! As a Cask Marque pub we serve a wide range of award-winning Cask ales alongside world beers and wines, so there is plenty to choose from.

We look forward to your visit to our cosy country pub.

Ken & Sue and the team.

Lovely local pub, I've been here a few times and the staff are very nice and courteous. Food is fresh and tasty, the loo is clean and up to spec. Car park is fine for the size of the pub. Nice selection of ales and pricing is fair. Cheers

We are staying at the premier Inn nearby and came here to eat as the food at the premier inn is terrible. It was also my wife's birthday. All I can say is wow! All 7 of us had perfect meals. Really good home cooked piping hot food. It was just a lovely experience from start to finish. Donna was so kind and welcoming and funny too. We had a great laugh and were made to feel at home.the pub is a little gem . Nice open fires and flagged floors we were sad when the meal was over. Lovely hand cut thick chips, fantastic steak pie, home made curry and the best rice pudding ever. Don't go anywhere else, eat here and let Donna and Tina look after you! Thanks again white lion .x

Came for my mother's 65th birthday on Thursday evening and wow I was very impressed with the pub what a gorgeous place, we was greater by Donna who was fantastic very engaging and down to earth. We all had starters black pudding stack mushrooms fishcake and prawn cocktail for the birthday girl she was very impressed with the amount if prawns, my Stilton mushrooms where unreal I had a ribeye for main which again was unreal cooked to perfection. The kids had chips cheese and gravy and loved every bit with ice cream after. Unfortunately we never had any room left for dessert but will deffo be back for the famous roast they do and hopefully fit a dessert in then.

Good food and reasonably priced. I had T bone steak and the wife had salmon. I like my steak medium to well done ( so not dry but cooked all the way through ) this was done to perfection and yes as you can see by the pics, I like ketchup on my chips. Wife had salmon which again was perfect. Can get a bit busy, so definitely book ahead. Plenty of parking So no worries there. Only downer on the night was one member of staff who was a tad miserable. Not sure what was wrong but hope she recovers because other than that, it was an excellent dining out experience. Will definitely be going again.
