What a great pub experience (we visited in Nov. 2023). This was the 2nd time visiting and eating at this pub. It is perfectly located for climbing Blencathra otherwise it can be considered a bit in the middle of nowhere. However, it is certainly worth a trip to as the food is gorgeous (being vegan, I'm referring to the vegan options here, but everyone looked very happy with their meals) and ales really good and change over time. The staff are super friendly, polite & very efficient. We were in a camper van for the weekend and wanted to hike Blencathra for sunrise, so the pub was ideally placed for this. And, brilliantly, if you eat & drink in the pub, you can use their car park to overnight for free. I would suggest booking a table in advance as it gets very busy; our table was next to a real fire, which was great with minus temperatures outside. The pub is very dog friendly, so feel free to take your 4 legged friends in the pub. The pub also offers accommodation (called the bunkhouse), which appears to get booked up, so again book in advance. Overall, with excellent food, friendly staff, a really lovely atmosphere and good beer, we had a brilliant experience here and would highly recommend it. It also makes a great place to head for if you are after a Sunday roast as this is offered every Sunday.
Awkward and difficult to review because the bunk house is basic but clean and efficient. Lots of hot water in the showers in the evening but freezing in the morning. The bunk house is plastic mattresses only but they’re clean. The kitchen has a microwave and fridge and 2 long tables, and it’s generally well stocked. The pub on the other hand serves good food if you can get them to give you a seat among all the tables with reserved signs on but nobody at the tables. The taller greying haired man behind the bar is surly and rude. Also didn’t have everything advertised on the menu. Steep drink and food prices. I think it’s a case of them always being busy so not having to care much.
What a superb place with above and beyond customer service. We called in after walking on Saturday and they were extremely accommodating finding us a table to have an evening meal. Food was delicious. I had cider battered haddock and my partner opted for a starter of king prawn and a side salad, it was huge portion and more than enough to make a main . Thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Staff were very attentive without being over bearing, can't recommend them enough. If you are in the area, or even just passing and need a rest stop, you won't be disappointed.
This review is for the food and their bunkhouse! Food (4 stars, above average)The Lamb Henry, Steak and Ale Pie, Three Pigs are all phenomenal, and huge portions to boot. My favorite will have to be the Lamb Henry, for the ridiculously tender lamb. The bartenders and wait staff are friendly and love a good laugh. Would highly recommend eating here if you're in Keswick. Bunkhouse (3stars, average) Our group of 8 stayed at their bunkhouse accommodation, split into two rooms. The facilities include a common kitchen/dining room, and toilet/showers. Most of the areas are acceptably clean and tidy, but hey it's a bunkhouse after all. You can either bring your own bedding or pay £5 to have it provided. The rooms are quite small, so be prepared for a bit of a squeeze. We were staying here during a heat wave, and due to the poor air circulation in the rooms, it was pretty darn hot. There is only a tiny window you can keep open! Be sure to bring your own towel and toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc).
Called here last minute after running around all afternoon trying to find somewhere to get in for a meal, I rang in advance and got a table in 45 minutes! Lovely atmosphere and really quick and friendly service. The Sunday roast was absolutely amazing! One of the best I’ve had in a long time. The meats were cooked to perfection. Would definitely return when I am in Keswick.
