A large handsome hill-top pub originally built 1853, now cut off from rest of Bradford Rd by new route of the A650 but visitors to the nearby garden centre can't miss it. An interesting fact about the pub is that it once belonged to "Prophet" John Wroe, the evangelist who founded the Christian Israelite Church in the 1820s after having what he believed were a series of visions.
1st time visit to the Malt Shovel. There's a great range of pies on the menu which taste superb. You do need to be hungry as the portions are large. Dog friendly pub also.
Unbelievable We just come from London we went to Durham for a funeral. And by my lord Jesus 🙏 must have lead us of motorway to find such a chusti dinner I had pork belly 😋 absolutely 💯 best I've had In my life. If passing again I 💯 be popping in again. There was 5 men and we all said the same.
If you like a variety of pies then this place is for you!! Excellent choice of food especially pies which come with 3 choices of toppings, freshly cooked with giant chips. Pie, Chips & Peas with a pint that's all you need!

Staff really pleasant, listened to every requirement. Lily a credit to the pub. Took daughter for her 18th birthday, booked day before and even day staff pleasant... old feel to the pub and food was excellent quality.
