The Victory Inn came into being when the owner of the village grocers shop decided to apply for a licence to turn part of his premises into a ‘bar parlour’, selling the beers of the Southdown and East Grinstead Brewery.
His first attempt was unsuccessful and rejected by the local justices as there was already a pub in the village, so he persevered and eventually was granted his license in 1848. The pub was then named after his legal victory, and the pub sign still shows a judge on one side and the landlord on the other.
The current owners, Janet Shepherd and Jane Pedgrift, took over in April 2010 and made it their mission to establish The Victory as an integral part of village life, and give Staplefield and the wider community a proper independent pub to be proud of.

What a great experience, We were accommodated on a busy New Year’s Day when the pub was busy with a large party and the welcome ,service and food was superb. My Wife ,Daughter and granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Thank you so much for your amazing hospitality, very much appreciated !
Stopped into this local pub on the way to Brighton. It was amazing! The seasoned fries were perfect and the burger was lovely. Totally recommend to anyone nearby. Lovely staff and a very homely feel. There was a log-burner to keep us warm as well which was nice on a cold day.
Absolutely fantastic. We could not have been made to feel more welcome on what was probably their busiest weekend of the year, the London to Brighton veteran car run. We were offered a cancellation for lunch on the Sunday following our visit on the Saturday. The village was packed to the gunnells and the pub were happy and allowed access to their loos for the general public. The lunches on both days were fantastic value and served promptly from very friendly enthusiastic staff. They really made our weekend perfect. Had an outside bar from early doors serving coffee and breakfast baps too.
Lovely pub. Really friendly team running it. Was a fab place to stop and wet your whistle and have a leisurely late lunch after a long walk.
I could not find one fault with the meal and experience we had at the Victory. The food was delicious, if only we could have tried more because everything was so good. Staff were friendly and the service was perfectly timed. The pub has implemented COVID rules however they do not take away from the experience and you feel perfectly safe (all staff wore face masks). Definitely recommend visiting and supporting a local pub.
