Set in the picturesque village of Burpham in the South Downs National Park, just over two miles from Arundel, The George at Burpham is a traditional 17th century country pub which has been providing warm hospitality to villagers and visitors for over 300
Following refurbishment in 2013, the pub now has an inviting contemporary interior and serves seasonal, locally-sourced, freshly-cooked food with fine ales, wines and spirits. This pub, now locally owned, aims to live up to the ambition . . "By the locals, for the locals, of the locals - and a very warm welcome to everyone" . . including muddy-booted walkers and well-behaved dogs!
It seems that our efforts are being recognised not only by our customers' feedback but also by Sawday's bestowing us with a 'Community Pub Award'. We have also been included in the current AA Guide and Michelin 'Eating Out in Pubs' guide - and, based on customers' reviews, TripAdvisor have now awarded us their 'Certificate of Excellence' for five years running.
In 2015 we won the award for Sussex Life's 'Best Community Pub' category. Last year we were nominated and made it to the final three in their awards
for the 'Best Pub in Sussex 2016'.
Part of our purpose, being at the centre of the community, is to use our position to raise money for local charities. In our first year we raised over £2,000 for Chestnut Tree House; last year we raised over £7,000 for our local charities. In 2016 we added The Lavinia Norfolk Centre at Angmering School, and our hope is to expand our fundraising success even further this year.
Sue, our manager, and her team look forward to welcoming you here at
The George in the near future!.

Nicest pub food all year. We met as family from two different directions have been going to the pub couple of times a year, it keeps getting better! Lovely friendly service on arrival. Menu had some very unusual choices both starters and mains were excellent. We had very nice NZ wine as well. Had to force down desert but also well with it.
A remarkable meal, starting with a warm welcome and excellent service throughout. The menu offered some intriguing choices, and every mouthwatering dish was superbly prepared. Yes, it's a little pricey (for a pub) but heartily recommended.
Its hard to get to as no local transport too and from. Is a few miles from turn off of A27 Arundel near railway station. Wanted some food but was told they do over 120 meals on Sunday so have to book 2 weeks in advance. I do not work that way as am more of a spontaneous person. This seems the norm these days on a Sunday. Had a nice drink and sat out side on one of the benchs. There is a car park around the back quite large but gets full up very quickly. Not much parking on the streets around the houses and church. There is also a lovey green park where there is cricket played and children's fenced off play ground. Nice walks beyond with view of Arundel Castle used to take my dog there. They are also long field walks accessed through the church's grave yard over the wall.
What an absolute cracker of a place. Highly recommended, a hidden gem. We stopped for a pint and a Sunday roast during our southdowns walk. Outstanding. Gluten free options available too. The staff were amazing. 10/10
Such a lovely pub to visit! The food is delicious, the pub is dog friendly and the area is perfect for sunny day walks 👌🐾 This is a very popular pub so if you want to eat here make sure to book well in advance! 👌
