About us

The truth is the Wellington Arms is simply one of the, well, for want of a better word, nicest, country escapes in its price bracket that I have ever stayed in.

The building itself is a fine late 18th-century former hunting lodge on the edge of the Duke of Wellington’s Stratfield Saye estate on the border between Hampshire and Berkshire about an hour’s drive from London. Owners Jason King and Simon Page picked it up in 2005, boarded up after an unhappy spell as an unloved local, then called the New Inn.

Now, the first impressions are good even before you open the handsome Farrow & Ball painted (“Lichen” in case you are wondering) front door. The entrance is surrounded by a defensive line of solid lead planters bursting with hellebores and miniature greengage trees.

Inside the buzzy bar and restaurant the floral theme continues, but with real flowers, not chintz. Dreamily fragrant hyacinths adorn every table, with lilies and tulips on the bar.

I went here for a family meal received appalling service. The staff were completely rude and inattentive. We waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive and had to ask a member of staff 3 times where our drinks were after 20 minutes. We heard some members of staff gossiping about other people and even speaking poorly about certain customers. This made me feel quite self conscious and uncomfortable. However their hygiene levels were very high. After our experience here I would not go again unfortunately as I live 5 miles away from this location making it easy to access.

We had an Absolutely lovely New Years Eve dinner, the food was delicious beyond words, the ambience was perfect, Simon the host was amazing, very attentive and all the staff were charming, we are definitely going back soon. Did I mention the food was out of this world?

Outstanding in every way. A wonderful experience for all of the senses. The quality of ingredients/food/cheffing for our evening meal courses (and breakfast) was just superb and the wines we tried were absolutely gorgeous. The location is tranquil/beautiful and the wonderful, listed, main building oozes character and a warm, welcoming charm which essentially continues and evolves into a very cosy/homely 'old pub' ambience within but of a high quality. The main building (and the lovely accommodation buildings, plants, beds and grounds) are all beautifully maintained and presented (which is an extra effort and expense at this time of year) and many establishments don't bother sadly but the Wellington Arms do, which speaks volumes about their professionalism and care about the whole 'experience' there for visitors and our stay was a really refreshing 'joy', start to finish. The Wellington Arms is a genuine 'gem' and a really great find. It is head and shoulders above most other establishments of its type. Everything oozed real quality, care and attention to detail but without being pretentious. 'Quietly wonderful'. It all spoke for itself eloquently and beautifully. The perfect balance in my humble opinion. My only regret is that we didn't stay 2 nights. We shall be back.

Lovely place with the nicest owners. Beautiful food, excellent well priced wine, non intrusive service and you can even stay over in one of their well appointed rooms. We’ve stayed over and the breakfast is perfect. Lovely for a weekend break to explore the Ridgeway or Berkshire or just an indulgent lunch. Nice crowd too, grown up and very, very civilised. Highly recommended.
