About us

It has been sensitively decorated and tastefully restored to keep the character of this wonderful building. Still with the original open beams, exposed brickwork and stonework, the original brass handrails, the open fire place makes it a perfect venue for a wedding, celebration or private party

The venue set on the bank of the River Wear has a large outside space with seating and exceptional views over the river. Cobbled paths with trees and shrubs offer great photograph opportunities along with the backdrop of the building. The grounds are very private with a secluded, tranquil setting along with private parking. The venue is away from the hustle and bustle yet close to major roads and short access to the town centre.

The Banqueting Suite is the perfect room for a wedding breakfast reception and can hold up to 84 guests. The room comes with natural daylight, magnificent views overlooking the river, the grounds and surrounding areas. It is a quirky traditional room with the old Ropery theme to it. It still has the restored wooden ceiling beams with crystal chandelier hanging down twinkling in the daylight, open stonework and private bar facilities. This room gives off a lovely atmosphere and has a great feel to it.

Webster's Ropery, also known as Deptford Patent Ropery on the River Wear did in fact make actual ropes! Established in 1793 the company reputedly made some of the ropes for Nelson's Flagship HMS Victory. 1804 Production reached 800 tons per year. 1891 they produced a steel rope 4 miles long and weighing 20 tons, for a colliery in south west England. The cranes at the yard and at the goods station were unable to lift the load all at once, so it was made up into three coils, allowing the slack between them to hang, and the coils were lifted one at a time.
