The Dun Cow is named after a local myth. Legend has it that the Dun Cow was a "monstrous beast four yards high and six yards long" which provided milk to the locals. A witch made it go on a murderous rampage until it was slain by Guy, Earl of Warwick. In 1605, the Gunpowder Plotters also stayed in Dunchurch.

Condescending front of house manager upon our 'walk in' arrival. Requested 'well done' meat dish but received ' lightly cooked' (water still oozing from my gammon choice when cut open) thereby causing delay whilst my meal taken back to kitchen (my wife had almost finished her meal before mine reappeared). Upon receipt of the meal bill, (15.95 each for two courser) we discovered we were being charged £18 for our two drinks!....consisting of a pint of Estrella & a glass of wine!......suffice to say we won't ever again be making the journey to the Dun Cow from Daventry even if most other eateries are shut on a Monday or don't do food.
Went for Christmas Dinner & feel they were a bit overwhelmed to be polite! Wife's & daughters fish based starters weren't cooked through & had to be returned, and had to chase the staff all day forn cutlery. I feel they should have run a much simpler menu. I had traditional Christmas Dinner which was fine. If they just offered that and a couple of vegetarian / vegan options (?) they would still have filled the place, so why try & do more than you can cope with? I'm a fairly regular visitor, so I know it can be better.
Parking excellent, doggie treats, water bowls a welcome sight. Had roast dinner superb, had the shared cheese dip, would have liked a little more bread, 2 slices each not enough 3 or 4 would have been better. Shame they have spoilt the fireside with the facade spoils what could be a gorgeous brick fireplace. Overall if back in the area would return. Carol
I came in for lunch and after having friends recommend the Dun Cow I thought why not give it a try. The food was amazing I had the hunters chicken and the brownie and safe to say I was stuffed. Our server Hannah was lovely and polite and catered for all our needs and was a true delight to meet as she helped keep my daughter entertained, would recommend to others.
Booked as was given a birthday voucher and fancied somewhere not been and so glad we decided on here. Did book on the morning and glad we did as obviously a very popular choice. We arrived half an hour early but certainly not a problem as shown straight away to our table which was absolutely perfect and very cozy considering it was a bit nippy outside. Drinks order taken straight away along with food order as we had already checked the menu for vegan options. Drinks arrived soon after and after a quick chat and taking in beautiful surroundings, so did our food. Nothing too much trouble, food and service great. So glad we decided to go and will definitely return, maybe even book a room and try whiskey menu. Fully recommend!
