About us

Wine and dine in relaxed surroundings and share in Stratford’s rich and famous heritage. We have a diverse and thoughtful menu, locally-sourced and seasonally adjusted, as well as a comprehensive range of fine wines and beers from all over the world.

‘The Vintner’ derives its name from the year 1600, when John Smith traded, along with his wife, as a wine merchant (vintner) in this building. It is more than likely that William Shakespeare purchased his wine from here!

This genuinely unique example of timber-framed architecture has remained largely unaltered since its construction in the late- 1400’s. Still privately owned after 500 years, the sense of history in this ancient building remains intact, from the flagstone floors to the fabulous expanse of oak beams.

I had a fantastic dining experience at this restaurant! The mussels were perfection – succulent and bathed in a sauce that elevated the dish to another level. The burger was equally impressive, boasting an amazing combination of flavors. The attention to detail in both dishes and the overall quality of the meal left me thoroughly impressed.

Lovely dinner out, sat by the window. Superb food and drinks, great service. Lovely to sit at the bar before and after dinner - good atmosphere. The escalope pork dish was amazing.

It’s a random choice to pick The Vintner for lunch, first impression was well decorated, old but very nice. We got the basic service as what drinks and food we would like, nobody asked us if the food was ok, if we wanted more drinks (when my partner finished his drink) when we were walking downstairs to leave, staff were chatting away and didn’t say thank you or good bye to us. Food ~ I had sea bream and veg with presto was nice, fish slightly overcooked as it’s a thin piece of fish. My partner had burger and chips, he’s impressed with the crunchy chips, but burger was average. Atmosphere was terrible, we were sitting upstairs, nice and quiet when we sat down, there was another table of 2, then 3 guys came and they were extremely loud, chatted with the waitress for ages, ok I know it’s a pub but upstairs of the pub was not big, windows were closed as air con was on, we were forced to listen to their conversation, as they were that loud, my partner and I just couldn’t have a conversation unless we shouted at each other!!! We rushed to finish eating and leave. There is a big step to get in and out of the place.

Beautiful old gastro pub at the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon. Due to proximity to the Shakespeare theatre, they have a pre-theatre dinner menu as well. Great service, attentive but not pressuring. The food was great, cheese souffle was to die for. Recommend for special celebration days for family but also for a nice night out for couples
